I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve tripped over the word “Drury Lane”. I think it’s practically every time – is it just me?!
I hope everyone reads this and calls it “that brunch cafe with red doors at Tanjong Pagar?” instead of making me say Drury Lane! Haha.
Anyway, yes – Drury lane, located at the infamously very hard to find parking Tanjong Pagar – just right opposite all the bridal shops, lined up with all the eateries and pubs that come alive at night.
Their fire engine red doors are hard to miss – In fact it’s not just doors – the entire facade for the 1st level is painted a bold red!
The cafe spans over 2 levels, with quite a small number of seating and seems to be really randomly decorated. A little eclectic, but mostly with wooden furniture – you’ll see plenty of crates and wooden benches – more rustic looking ones are on the second floor!
We found great seats on the second floor, but for food photographers (these days… who isn’t already one?!), the lighting isn’t that sufficient – but yes do try seating near the windows! Which is something I love.
Don’t expect too many choices here (still more than Lola’s though…)
Simple plates, but oh such beautifully done eggs!
Baked beans were fantastic, as vouched for by the two with me that day. Even the mushrooms were nicely done!
I had pancakes, which was served with berry compote and fruit slices! I loved how the fruit made the pancakes less jelat to finish. It was yummy and on the whole, everything I’ve tried makes me want to come back for more! (If only the parking wasn’t that cumbersome…)
While I did like the food, I’ve only visited here once so I hope this isn’t a one off chance that the food tasted good that day. I think they have really, really nice scrambled eggs! In fact, it wasn’t too creamy (not so much butter, I guess?) and it didn’t make me feel nauseous (sometimes when I eat things that are too creamy I’ll react that way).
Unfortunately though, the service here is a little lacking. Just a little. I wasn’t sure if it was due to the full capacity, or the short staff.
I was in good company, so I lost track of time… but we were hungry and felt the hunger pangs – food took really long to be served!
In fact I believe we waited an entire 30 minutes for it or even more. I guess it’s because it was full house that day, but still… It had to be the longest wait for brunch I’ve had so far – it was enough for my friend to take an mrt from Orchard and walk over from Tanjong Pagar Station! And then by the time my friend arrived, we had to wait another 15 minutes for his coffee.
But you know what, the scrambled eggs and baked beans were so good, it’s all forgiven. Hahaha. Just make sure you come with friends you can yak non-stop with, and that you aren’t in a rush!
