WTaipei Hotel Stay + OOTD feat. Jack Wills & Rosebullet

By | Asia, Awesomeness, Fashion, OOTD, Travel | One Comment

Nobody fancies being rushed about on a holiday – after my first few trips out of Singapore, I’ve come to realize that the idea of a holiday to me, is being able to wake up anytime I want, and deciding on a whim where to go or at least, be able to shift my plans around leisurely. And spend some time rolling about on the expensive and so-cushy-and-comfy-it-will-swallow-you hotel bed!

For our first night in Taipei, we checked into W Hotel, a 5-Star hotel along Zhongxiao East Road, after a morning spent exploring other parts of Taipei.

I took a look at the Wonderful room we were assigned, and decided there and then that I would spend time luxuriating in that plush environment. (I think my husband guessed that too, because he headed out in the morning to get breakfast while I idled my morning away haha).

Check-in was at Level 10 . It’s also where you can find WooBar, WetBar, the outdoor pool, and The Kitchen Table (dining/breakfast area)!

I usually bring my laptop overseas with me for work so I'm happy to find a great work area - long desk - with many ports! Free WiFi in WTaipei is only for Starwood Preferred Guests (membership), but that wasn't a problem for me as I had my portable WiFi devices from GlobalWiFi to supply me with continuous internet connection!

The Wonderful room, which was almost half the size of a 4-room HDB Flat in Singapore at 43sqm, came equipped with many things – a city view from the window, their W Signature bed which was so comfy I fell asleep immediately and almost couldn’t get up.

The dressing area was big and spacious – the bath’s doesn’t have any doors, but if you’re worried about privacy, there’s a sliding door at where the grills are that separates the dressing area and the bed. The lavatory is isolated and has a self warming seat + automated seat cover (which sort of scared the bejeezus out of us when we opened the door to use it)!

One of my favorite feature - their well lit dressing area and the huge mirror they have in the room! The lighting was perfect for makeup application as well as to check out my outfit of the day. (This was my in-flight outfit)

I don’t have a bathtub back at home, so usually I would bring my own bath bomb when I travel overseas but this time round, I forgot – and I was glad to find WTaipei’s sachet of relaxing bath salts in their provided toiletries!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Other than the bath salt, they also carried BLISS toiletries for their guests’ usage! The citrusy scent from the BLISS products was very welcome and refreshing ;)

My view of the bustling city from the 28th floor of W Taipei - I wouldn't expect less from a 5-star hotel!

I fell asleep really quickly, but for some people they might not be used to the silence in the room - I was intrigued to find this beneath the bedside table - A White Noise machine?! Apparently it can emit sounds of rain, thunder and even ocean waves for periods of 14, 30, or 60 seconds. It's the first time I've seen any hotel offer this!

They actually provide a nice selection of magazines so I spent a part of my morning flipping through them for OOTD inspirations hahaha. Finished up a bottle of HABA's Firming Lift Up Beauty Drink which I left in the fridge the night before to chill! It minimizes visible pores, enhances tissue regeneration and combats fatigue - and I was interested to know how this would help me on a long day!

Had to call concierge twice to request for late check out and also for assistance with the luggage! Hahaha. They were really on time and super helpful – the concierge kept asking if I needed help inside because I sounded like I was struggling with a baby elephant.

Finally made it out of my room at 1pm and met up with the guys at the lobby! JUST HAD TO TAKE AN OOTD at the outdoor area because it’s so beautiful!

The skorts were super comfy and apt for the cool autumn weather! Paired them with the most lightweight boots ever from Nine West - these were so comfy (no zips, etc) and weighed practically next to nothing (meaning I didn't have to drag my feet around or sacrifice my luggage weight to bring them there!)

I love how the outdoor area of the W Taipei looks so different in the day and at night!

I visited W Singapore, and realized that it smelt familiar – I believe they use the same scent and choice of eclectic decoration for all their hotels around the world – I love such details when it comes to branding – the same fonts, the same elements and bright accent splashes of color  (purple lights and red decor!) that bring a very modern and edgy look to their chain of hotels.

One last shot with Yinagoh before we left to explore Taipei and also for (late) lunch!

Some people may feel that it’s time wasted, but I felt well rested and happy and I think that’s a great mood to start the day! That being said, ever since I came back from Taipei, I’ve been adjusting my sleeping habits and am waking up earlier to get more things done in the day (more about that another time).

Everyone knows that I’m REALLY picky when it comes to lodging – toilets must be clean, beds must be comfy, carpets must not be smelly and such – not too sure if that’s a good or bad thing, haha. But a good night’s sleep is really needed on a vacation. Ample space for luggage. Windows for sunlight to come in. Location, and all! The convenience of W Hotel’s location is really unbeatable – I really should have taken more time walking around that area. More Taipei posts to come! (Gah I’m so anal when it comes to editing photos.)

Heineken Cities Festival – bringing together the world’s top cities in our very own Singapore!

By | Awesomeness, Life, Party | No Comments

About a month ago I came down with fever suddenly and had to miss out an event I was super looking forward to. It was the Heineken Cities Festival – a bar hopping experience along the streets of Ann Siang Hill & Club Street, to celebrate the launch of the 6 Heineken City Edition bottles named after the top cities of the world – Singapore, Amsterdam, Shanghai, London, New York and Rio De Janerio!

heineken-cities-limited-bottle-festival-singapore-august-2014-15

What happened at the Heineken Cities Festival in Singapore

If you’ve missed it, don’t worry – Here are some of the pictures from the event for! The streets along Ann Siang were packed with people (I had so many friends that were there and I could feel the vibe and fun from my Instagram feed!) and roving performances, from…

Samba dancers

Cabaret girls from Old Shanghai

Chinese fusion dancers from Old Shanghai

Break dancers

And the most impressive thing that I missed was probably the live mural painting! I would have stood there the whole night to witness this coming to live before my eyes!

Live mural painting by local visual artist & illustrator - Mindflyer!

It would have been so much fun if I could have attened the festival!

WHOOOOOOO!

WHOOOOOOO!

So when it so happens that there was gonna be a lunch gathering at my friend’s place, I insisted on bringing beer down and we brought bottles of Heineken City Edition bottles (which are limited edition!) down to my friend’s place!

I made sure I got all 6 variations! And when they picked up their beer they were surprised that it had countries on it!

No time to lose – first thing that I did when I reached was to chill them! I also made sure that I have got all 6 city variations – and when they picked up their beer they were surprised that it had different cities on the label!

Coincidentally, this event was a little international as well, haha. The host and hostess are from Malaysia (recently became Singaporean Citizens), and there was a Polish couple amongst us as well!

I have wonderful friends who cook so very well (and take cooking really seriously) and this time round, it was RAMEN! My ultimate favorite, if you can’t already tell haha. And the best thing to go along with ramen would be biiru (Japanese for beer), right?!

The hosts made such a perfect bowl of ramen that I'm still thinking about it a few days later...

The hosts made such a perfect bowl of ramen that I’m still thinking about it a few days later…

The charsiew – tied up and marinated and slow cooked for 30 hours, then pan-fried to charred perfection; the noodles painstakingly hand kneaded, rolled, and cut; the ajitsuke tamago (eggs with soft centre) soaked in soy sauce, mirin and sugar for 12 hours as well; the soup base, ahhh… ZERO MSG and absolutely flavorful!

Kudos to the wonderful hosts, aka the Au Yongs for making this such a fab lunch for all of us!

The ladies' serving size and the men's serving size!

The ladies’ serving size and the men’s serving size!

Don’t belittle the small bowl of noodles – it was just perfect for me! I wished I could eat more though because the noodles were so so so tasty! It didn’t taste too flour-y or powdery and it was just the right amount of firmness even after my 10 minutes of photographing before the meal!

No we were not in Tokyo... This delicious bowl of noodles were served in sunny Singapore!

And this is one half of the Polish couple working and living in Singapore, also cheekily known as angmogirl on various social media sites! I love her moniker and the fact that she likes Japanese magazines and all!

After lunch was cleared, some of them proceeded to play card games while I sunk onto the sofa like a satisfied blonde potato. But the game piqued my interest…

Basically, it's called cards against humanity. A deck of black cards decides the question(s), and the white cards are either appropriate, or extremely funny and totally inappropriate hahaha.

It is also known as a party game for horrible people. I so need this!!!! Hahaha.

And that was the end of the party (for us at least)! I cleaned up the bottles and brought them home with me for decoration purposes in my new home, hehehe. The green bottles were very pretty, and instead of the usual paper label they're clear stickers and really easy to clean off!

Special thanks to Au Yong and Tsewei (link to ramen recipe!) for the fantastic lunch – I swear that it’s quite possibly the best I’ve tasted! and also for the company and laughter! People bond over many things, but most of the time, it’s food, laughter and beer! ; )

The Limited City Edition Heineken bottles (New York, London, Amsterdam, Rio de Janeiro, Shanghai and Singapore) will be available at all bars serving Heineken till end September, while stocks last! You can also find them in various convenience stores and supermarkets – I got mine in Jason’s at ION Orchard! P.S. – The Singapore bottle will only be sold in Singapore, so grab a bottle to keep, now!

If you are also looking out for hidden gems in Singapore, or hot spots to check out this weekend, be sure to check out Heineken’s Open Your City site!

Tokyu Hands “Japan’s Creative Life Store” opens in Singapore at Westgate!

By | Art & Craft, Awesomeness, Shopping | 15 Comments

Shopping in Jurong just got a little bit more awesome. It’s not hard to love JEM/Westgate, malls which are linked to each other by a very punny sounding “J-walk” and together have Kinokuniya, Muji, Robinsons, Sephora, Isetan and many food outlets between them for a shopper to get lost in for the entire day.

And now we have Tokyu Hands, Japan’s “Creative Life Store”‘s second overseas store in Asia – right here in Singapore’s Westgate mall!

tokyu-hands-singapore-westgate

Edit 20/11/2014: Tokyu Hands has opened a second branch in Orchard Central, at Basement 1! ; )

You cannot compare Tokyu Hands massive stores in Japan to the 7,500 sq ft Tokyu Hands Singapore store, but it certainly wasn’t any less interesting!

If you’ve been to their pop-up stores (back in 2012/2013, I made a beeline for both their pop up stores!) which brought in a small selection and wasn’t feeling too fangirl-ly about it, fret not – the temporary store’s got much more space, and many more interesting items – me and my girlfriend were going “wah wah wah!” non-stop at the items they’ve brought in, which are specially curated with the Singaporean shopper in mind!

If you already love Tokyu Hands in Japan and feel like buying the entire shop when you’re there, keep your wallet tight – because this store’s got me feeling the same too. I had to resist carting more of their quirky and cute items into my basket!

Less talk, more pictures. In case Jurong is too far for you, here’s a peek of what’s in store for you if you decide to take a quick jaunt in the west!

tokyu-hands-westgate-singapore-5

Flanking the front of the store, you have RooTote, which lets you customize tote bags to your desire with their hot-press technology (sort of like what used to go on in pasar malams and tee shirts, but with better quality patterns!).

tokyu-hands-westgate-singapore-2 tokyu-hands-westgate-singapore-3

And right beside it, you have B-side label, a sticker brand with a store in Harajuku! I’ve actually purchased their stickers before on 2 previous trips and I’m glad to see them in Singapore! Decorate your MBP, Files, iPhone casings etc with these waterproof stickers – in fact I bought some “I LOVE TOKYO” ones but haven’t had time to get them onto Ah Teck yet. (“Ah Teck”‘s the name of my ride hahaha) As you can see, they have stickers of all sorts, from the cute to the sexy and text based ones and they’re all designed by B-side Label themselves! It’s worth a look and I can foresee this being popular with students especially!

tokyu-hands-westgate-singapore-4

And at the front of the beauty section, which are all located on the left side of the store, we have Vecua Honey, a skin / body care line from Japan AND made in Japan with naturally derived ingredients of the finest quality! Their body scrub is da bomb and their body shampoo smells soooo good. I’ll talk about them a little more in a separate blog post because they have quite a huge range of products, but trust me, you’ll love their body scrub! It leaves my skin soooo smooth and happy ; D

Even their envelopes are PRETTY. And this one has a matching notepad set mind you. I didn't see much cute notepads like what they always have in Tokyo though.

You can grab an exclusive Tokyu Hands Japan tape but it's not anything special looking. I do hope that they start doing some kind of limited edition Tokyu Hands Singapore tape someday : p

Actually i REALLY need this in my kitchen. It's so damn hard for me to open bottle caps and all (sorry my hand is weaksauce). Any simple problem you can think of, the Japanese have a solution for it. Salute.

One of the more interesting things (to me) was this anti dust mite thingy. I was amused by the NINJA branding (it's specially rebranded for overseas market as the original Japanese packaging was just not attractive enough).

They even brought in dust mites (from japan, the sales staff said) to show you and he gave a very detailed explanation about dust mites and how we can zap them with his $35 a piece technology. Yes I was sold.

Other than Vecua Honey which I’ve mentioned at the top of the post, Tokyu hands also carries in an impressive range of Japanese beauty brands, such as Koh Gen Do, Haba, Canmake, Chacott, Makanai Cosmetics, Jozen Mizuno Gotoshi, Wasser, NOV, as well as drugstore brands like DollyWink, Heroine Make etc!

You can also find Koh Gen Do at Takashimaya, but it is pretty well stocked here as well!

Makanai cosmetics was a brand I was happy to see! It was founded in Kanazawa by women working in a foundry which pounds gold leaves with materials and ingredients from the workshop and kitchen.

See the logo? It's a rabbit pounding mooncake on a wooden mortar! I became acquainted with this brand because my eyelash sponsor bought me a pack as omiyage from their trip back to Kyoto and this facial washing powder was so interesting! Rice powder is contained in a sachet and you have to wet it to get suds out - then wash your face with it. I think it's a pretty interesting novelty item and was a good omiyage as I had fun with it. It costs $8 in Tokyu Hands and comes in 3 different scents/ingredient combination for different skins.

Japanese staff: "this is not cotton candy! do you want to try a bit of foam on your hands?" and he obligingly posed for a picture when I asked for it hahaha Always been amazed by how the Japanese take foaming to a totally different level!

Something about beautifully packed cosmetics that wants to make you pick it up. I think it's a japanese thing, they are so meticulous and pay so much attention to branding and packaging! I have much respect for their designers.

I initially planned to spend like maybe max 30 minutes in there but there were so much stuff to explore that I ended up spending nearly 2 hours, and left the store nearly $200 poorer.

In actual fact it wasn't a lot of things hahaha BUT it was a happy day of shopping!

Felt like i didn’t spend enough time there as I was too busy taking pictures to soak up the full experience in-store. Now that I’ve blogged about it I’m gonna head back some time soon and slowly comb every inch of the store. Hehehe.

Thank you Dily, for inviting me over and the generous bag of delightful skin/body care items!

Price range wise, it’ll definitely be a little more expensive than Japan, but it’s not that unreasonably priced and the inflation differs from item to item. I couldn’t do price check for all the items but most of the Japanese craft items are same price, if not cheaper than other stationery stores out there. I’m more than happy to give support to the local store because I don’t want them to ever close down! I’ll be back, Tokyu Hands Singapore! <3

Snippets of CNY 2013 – Catching Up

By | Awesomeness, Life | One Comment

Well… since it was the CNY there was definitely a LOT of catching up done.

First up, Nuffnang’s Reunion Lunch! Am glad to have been “enlisted” into Nuffnang and join some of my long-time friends in there.

Too much pretty in one picture with Boss Ming!

Me, Yina & Juli ; )

I remember when I reconnected with Yina (after not talking to her for like almost 8 years) – she JUST joined Nuffnang, and I was incredibly happy for her! It’s been a good 1 or 2 years of going to events with her – we’ve been together so often that at some point we could market ourselves as a twin pack already – and I’m incredibly blessed to have her as a friend… because these are all her pictures. HAHAHAHA. She’s an awesome photographer (my fabulous OOTDs all by her!), and the kind of person who, when she puts her heart to it, can do ANYTHING. Really. I’m most impressed by her talents and skills, and most of all, determination (after watching her detox for a week). She’s not the typical airhead and she’s mature beyond her age. I can be myself around her, and thats the most important thing. Eh, even my BFF was jealous okay.

Juli – I stumbled upon her blog while googling for something (I can’t remember what) and my first thought was… Nah she cannot be a Singaporean blogger. Cos at that point of time I just started blogging publicly (again) and her layout was so adorable that it was just not.. you know, typically Singaporean. hehe. She managed to capture me with her beautiful eyes (or eye. most of the time I only see one…) and her tutorials and knowledge. Plus I love the way she writes. It’s proper, light, and feeds you just the right amount of humor and all the information you need for a product. And I recall the first time I met her, at Fullhouse for Sally Hansen. She was alone and I was like… “YOU ARE BUNBUN RIGHT!” – Yeah without knowing her name. Hahaha. I think we clicked mostly cos of our age and also because we’re very blunt – and I’m grateful for friendships like her’s and Yina’s. Please tell me when my eyeshadow blending is horrible or when my blusher is applied too high okay, I’ll love you for that.

Grandmother story aside, we adjourned for tea at TCC with the other lovely babes, Valerie and Velda!

Anddddddd you think that was it? No lor! There was STEAMBOAT!

With Jayne this time, who missed out on Reunion lunch and we insisted on eating together (Yina’s mum makes superb soup stock with freaking huge pork bones) along with our other halves… and the dogs!

All smiles after steamboat dinner! Yina… don’t forget the curry chicken hor.

I love these girls – no ulterior motives, and they are blunt – I like. I can be as blunt as I want with them too – and I appreciate honesty in a friendship. ; D

All in all, I’m pretty glad I entered public blogging. I may not know where this will bring me (I used to blog about everything and anything but now that I’m older, I’m much more reserved) or how far I can go, but as Yina says, 开心就好了 and these girls I’ve met? They are my 开心果, and people who understand me when I start to rant about certain things that come my way because of blogging. Thank you blogosphere for bringing me these wonderful people.

Ending this rambly-going-nowhere post with a pic of Momo looking extremely adorable even without facing the camera! Gah, I’m hungry now after all the food picture editing!!!

Shiseido White Lucent Celebrates 10 White Years – Giveaway!

By | Awesomeness | 31 Comments

I’m extremely excited to share this with you, because it will be an extremely short contest and there are only 2 pairs of winners (meaning, 4 winners) and the prizes are EXCELLENT!

Shiseido Singapore will be celebrating White Lucent’s 10th anniversary as well as its very own White Day for the third year in a row on March 14. Shiseido marks this day by giving women the gift of luminous skin and celebrates its love for pure, bright skin in this all-white affair.

Shiseido White Day Invitation

On White Day itself, March 14, you’re invited to pledge your love for luminous skin at Shiseido’s White Day Party happening from 6pm to 8.30pm at their Pop Up Store just along Mandarin Gallery, Orchard! Local celebrity and White Lucent user Jacelyn Tay will be making a special appearance at Shiseido’s White Day Party. Shiseido’s Senior Trainer and loyal White Lucent users will also be sharing their personal brightening experiences as well as tips on the day itself.

Registration for the White Day party is $30 and will be fully redeemable for Shiseido Products. Guests will receive an exclusive three-piece door gift, and if you come all dressed in white, you’ll receive an additional special gift. Guests who vote for their favourite White Lucent product could also win some other attractive prizes!

If you’d like to register, please head to any Shiseido counters to make payment.

As for the first pair of tickets, the contest is held on my instagram (@evonnz) – and for the second pair of tickets, yes, it’s gonna be held on this blog – and in a much simpler way too!

Shiseido White Lucent / White Day Party Tickets Giveaway

Simply leave a comment and let us know why you’d like to try Shiseido’s White Lucent range, and win yourself a pair of tickets to the event + fabulous prizes! Contest is only open to Singaporeans, and will end Wed, 13th March 2013, at 8pm. Winners will be chosen and notified by 10pm.

The winners to the contest on the blog will win an EXTRA goodie bag filled with awesomeness (I can’t tell you what exactly… but the hint is… “FULL SIZED”!).

Gooooooooooood luck!

The contest has ended, and the winner is Reila Soh! Thank you all for taking part!
