Beauty Day Out at Capitol Piazza with Mummy!

Every year during my birthday I make it a point to celebrate it with my family, or at the very least, thank my mummy for giving birth to me. I mean, this woman spent 9 months carrying me, giving up her youth, figure and time for me and not to mention all the pain she went through!

However, I didn’t have time to spend my birthday with my Mum this year and really wanted to bring her out for a day – it was timely that this idea of pampering her at Capitol Piazza came along and also rather coincidental that she’s NEVER been to Capitol Piazza before – even before it was renovated!

capitol-singapore-theatre-building-3

I’ve been to Capitol Piazza a couple of times and I do love the place so – conveniently located right beside City Hall MRT (with an underground walkway so that you wouldn’t get drenched), Capitol Piazza’s pretty lively especially during lunch time, due to its well curated mix of lifestyle, fashion and wellness retail tenants, and of course, the great selection of eateries! In fact, even though I’ve been there at least 10 times already, I’ve actually discovered more shops on this latest trip there!

Parking is easy at Capitol Piazza, ample lots (3 basement levels) and plenty of space between lots – also, per entry after 6 is just $3 flat*! (Weekdays only)

capitol-singapore-theatre-building-4The Capitol is an establishment full of history and culture. It consisted of 3 buildings – Capitol Theatre, Capitol Building, and Stamford House.

The most outstanding feature of Capitol Building was the curved structure of the building, which stands out when you pass by the junction at Stamford Road – it was designed in a distinctive, vintage looking neo-classical style. While it has been since redeveloped and renovated, the unique facade has been restored and kept, retaining the classic look and keeping it as a significant landmark of Singapore.

In fact, the retail tenants seem to echo the image of the building – I’ve come to associate Capitol with more well-placed and slightly higher end brands, and even the events I attend at Capitol are always a luxe affair.

Along the restored building lies a whole row of shops you probably didn’t know existed as it’s not part of the main mall, but it’s a sanctuary of sorts, merely a short walk away from the hustle and bustle of the mall.

Simply exit through Sulwhasoo, make a left turn, and you’ll find the Arcade – a charming walkway with pretty lamps and fans. Here you will discover more shops and services available, like O Medical, PREP, The Proposal and more!

The one and only agenda of the day was to pamper my mother, of course!

evonnz-capitol-piazza-beauty-day-out-with-mother-3

{ O Medical @ Capitol Piazza }

Brought her down to the first stop of the day – O Medical, a laser, hair removal and aesthetic clinic, where she received a consultation and was advised to try out a chemical peel after the doctor listened attentively to her wants and don’t wants, namely;

  • want less dull, radiant skin
  • don’t want pain, no laser

My mum is 52, and like most older women, she suffers from pigmentation problems and dulling of skin as her skin cells regenerates and shed slower – a chemical peel would aid in softening her skin and removing dead skin cells. I was pleasantly surprised myself by how much brighter her skin looked immediately after the chemical peel!

evonnz-capitol-piazza-beauty-day-out-with-mother-6

evonnz-capitol-piazza-beauty-day-out-with-mother-4My aunt actually joined us for the morning, and she also got lots of great advice from the Doctor in clinic that day – Dr. Rucha Karkhanis was extremely patient with our questions, which we had a ton of after we realized her age and were impressed with her skin condition at that age! I did not get any treatment done as I had an event that evening, but I definitely walked away with more knowledge, plus Dr. Rucha advised me on how to get rid of my troublesome back acne. The way she says things puts my mind at ease, that the problem can be quite easily treated. The simplest tip we brought home that day was to hydrate, hydrate and HYDRATE!

Thank you, Dr. Rucha!

Thank you, Dr. Rucha!

It was noon by the time we were done at O Medical, which means time for lunch! At Capitol Piazza, you’ll find eateries available on almost all floors of the building – from my very favourite Italian bistro Equilibrium (click for review!), to renowned French tea room Angelina, a taste of local fare at 1933, and the latest Indonesian franchise from Bali – Naughty Nuri’s!

I somehow managed to coax mum and aunt into having Naughty Nuri’s with me for lunch – you would think that it’s a posh looking mall and that it might be expensive, but set lunches in Capitol Piazza are actually really worth it! There are plenty of eateries at almost every level – you can find Ramen & Tonkatsu Ma Maison, Hoshino Coffee (love their french toast!), Four Seasons Chinese Restaurant and even Oriole Coffee + Bar in the building! There’s also llaollao for the froyo lovers, yum!

Nothing’s more delightful than a hair treatment post-lunch, and that’s exactly what we did!

{ PREP Luxe @ Capitol Piazza }

evonnz-capitol-piazza-beauty-day-out-with-mother-15

Made reservations for Mum and I at PREP Luxe – a homegrown brand offering full hair services (cut, color, treatments, wash and blow) but well known for being many ladies’ go-to choice when it comes to a perfect blowout.

We were booked for the Mucota Scena Treatment – I’ve long heard about Mucota’s haircare range and treatments, and how good it is as Japan’s #1 treatment, created specially for Asian hair.

evonnz-capitol-piazza-beauty-day-out-with-mother-12

The Mucota Scena Treatment ($170/$180) offered by PREP Luxe is a 75-minute, 3-step hair treatment to replenish moisture and repair the cell structure of your hair. The entire treatment’s full of  reparative ingredients like ceramides, amino acids, keratin and silk ppt which will give you lustrous hair for days after the treatment!

evonnz-capitol-piazza-beauty-day-out-with-mother-13

It was of course followed by a lovely signature blowout, which was just in time for my event later in the evening! Hehehe. My hair was teased to perfection, with the stylist paying attention to what I wanted – soft, bouncy curls, with plenty of volume on top!

evonnz-capitol-piazza-beauty-day-out-with-mother-18

After the hair treatment, we took a walk around the main shopping section of Capitol Piazza – where you’ll find shops and services like some of my favorite beauty stores – Lancôme, Aesop, as well as service oriented shops like Highbrow, Branché (Hair & Nail),  lifestyle brands like To Be Calm (White Tea & Ginger scent!) and fashion stores like Napapijiri, G-Star RAW,  Marimekko, and Manifesto!

We headed over to Aveda, whose hair care I’ve been meaning to check out – what I did not know was that they offered an extensive range of skincare as well, and this trip allowed me to understand Aveda better and the philosophy behind their beauty care range!

evonnz-capitol-piazza-beauty-day-out-with-mother-30{ Aveda @ Capitol Piazza }

B2-33 | Tel: +65 6384 1510

Founded in 1978, Aveda’s skincare sprouted from the basics of Ayurvedaa system of medicine with historical roots in the Indian subcontinent. Aveda eventually became a pioneer of holistic beauty, and a champion of environmental responsibility with the guidance of two Ayurvedic Physicians and their commitment to using organic ingredients.

From the ingredients to the packaging used, Aveda tries its best to provide and care for the environment – by using only ethically organic ingredients, not conducting animal testing, responsible manufacturing, supporting breast cancer research, right down to the packaging used!

evonnz-capitol-piazza-beauty-day-out-with-mother-24Aveda places emphasis on being well-balanced – I had a mini experience of how an Aveda Ritual would be like – you’ll get served a warm cup of tea, and asked to pick a scent you’d like from 7 scents available. Your senses will automatically guide you to pick a scent, and that scent co-relates to a particular chakra you might be missing from being well-balanced.

evonnz-capitol-piazza-beauty-day-out-with-mother-23evonnz-capitol-piazza-beauty-day-out-with-mother-22I was introduced to an extremely interesting first ritual of the day, called the Radiant Awakening Ritual. It is a 2-step ritual done before you wash your face – you first gently massage and exfoliate your face with a dry brush, followed by a light massage with their oleation oil before washing it off and starting your regular regime.

evonnz-capitol-piazza-beauty-day-out-with-mother-25Dry brushing is a technique from ancient Ayurveda, called gharsana – it gently lifts dry, dull cells from skin’s surface, exfoliates to promote skin cell turnover, and preps skin to take in nourishing oils, treatments and hydration that follow.”

I didn’t experience this on my face, but it would have been such a joy to pamper yourself first thing in the morning! It is then followed by using Aveda’s tulasāra™ radiant oleation oil for a facial massage, which is a step is inspired by an Ayurvedic technique called abhayanga. I love the scent of the oil and it’s like a mini aromatherapy session to relax and ready yourself for the day! Leave on for 4 minutes before washing it off, and you’re ready to begin with your regular skincare regime.

evonnz-capitol-piazza-beauty-day-out-with-mother-27

One thing I loved about Aveda was how knowledgable and friendly their staff were. Every single step of the ritual was well explained, and even the hair consultation was a breeze! I was really impressed because usually you’ll be met with urms and urhs… but this darling at Aveda was able to answer my every question with utmost confidence (in her knowledge and of the products they carry!).  I would recommend that you walk right in and sit down to get yourself acquainted with Aveda and their products, because the mini experience would blow you away.

And then it was the last stop of the day, an all time favorite since I was a teen – The Body Shop!

{ The Body Shop @ Capitol Piazza }

B2-18 | Tel: +65 6384 2764

evonnz-capitol-piazza-beauty-day-out-with-mother-29

The lady from The Body Shop wasn’t any less knowledgeable – I was in a rush, and she managed to speed talk and introduce to me to their latest and redesigned Drops of Youth™ skincare range!

The Body Shop Drops of Youth“The Body Shop Drops of Youth™ helps to provide you with smoother, bouncier, youthful looking skin by enhancing the cell renewal process and delivering a much-needed hit of supple hydration.”

The Body Shop’s Drops of Youth™ range isn’t at all oily nor sticky to the touch – it gets absorbed really quickly and is formulated with a number of powerful plant stem-cells, speeding up your cell renewal process to give you younger looking skin. The serum makes a good addition to my dresser and definitely aids with moisturizing! And remember what Dr. Rucha (from O Medical earlier on) recommended? HYDRATION!

Should you be looking to pick up just one more item from The Body Shop though, make it one of their 5 newly released Expert Facial masks. I have the entire set and it’s an absolute joy to cycle through them!

superfoodmasks-thebodyshopThe Body Shop’s Expert Facial Masks (S$32.90 each) are inspired by superfood trends and traditional remedies around the world and are wholly vegetarian (you’d be surprised how many people are looking for vegetarian gifts for their vegetarian friends). It’s really hard to choose just one from the amazing names and formulas – Amazonian Acai, British Rose, Chinese Ginseng & Rice, Ethopian Honey and Himalayan Charcoal, so I cycle through them the entire week! And after a week I was left with supple, smoother-feeling and really happy skin.

If you have to get gifts for someone, let this be it! It would make such a good bridesmaid gift, a Christmas stocking stuffer (enough with the hand creams already, hahaha) or a party exchange gift!

And with the last visit, it was time to head off to the airport to fetch my dad and then to attend my event! Mummy & I started at 10am, and only ended at 4pm *whew*

evonnz-capitol-piazza-beauty-day-out-with-mother-21It’s been such a long time since I’ve had an enjoyable day out with my Mum (she works, so she had to take a day off) and I was happy to see her pampered and radiant after the whole day at Capitol Piazza!

It was really coincidental that I’d noticed a poster for an Etsy Made Local event, which saw me coming back to Capitol Piazza again with my cousins! (In fact, I kept going back week after week for events and for this!). And by the time I was back, the Christmas decorations were up and we couldn’t resist taking some family photos!

I was pleasantly surprised by the turnout and also pretty excited by the local talents! Love, love love these cards and drawings.

etsy-made-local-2016-capitol-piazza-2

I took a little longer at the fair while the kids headed off to Hoshino Coffee for pancake and ice cream! I’m not going to encourage this, but what a time they had playing by the fountain right outside Capitol Piazza!

chees-at-capitol-8chees-at-capitol-6dsc09910

I’d say that nothing is more important than seeing the happy smiles on my loved ones’ faces and making moments like this. I loved the photos my parents took of me when I was younger – because I had such a bad memory I could only remember my childhood by looking at the photos. And these are irreplaceable memories between me and my cousins made – Thank you, Capitol Piazza! ; )

(Special credits to Myke for helping me grab this shot with everyone!)

Happy Holidays with Lancôme!

It’s mid October, and do you know what that means?

It’s almost Christmas!

(found online, hehehehe)

(found online, hehehehe)

Yes, I’m serious.
My design work for Christmas starts now. I’m sure various marketing departments have had things planned since March or even January. And as for me, I think about gifts all the time – when I see something I think someone would like, I’ll mentally note it down and remember to get it for a special occasion! So why not think about Christmas gifts now, right?

I definitely wouldn’t mind if you’ve been thinking of a gift for me, my dear friends. XD  (joking, lah)

Anyhoos, my first Christmas treat of the year happens to be a facial and makeover treat from Lancôme!

It’s been a long time since I’ve gone back to Lancôme Beauty Institute for a facial. For starters, the one previously at Grand Copthorne Hotel is no more – and a new LBI has been set up at the stunning La Maison Lancôme, which is their first standalone flagship store at Capitol Piazza (which I briefly mentioned in my previous post about the Advanced Genifique range of products)!

Other than La Maison Lancôme at Capitol Piazza, facials are also available at Robinsons Orchard, The Heeren.

I love La Maison Lancôme – it’s incredibly gorgeous, and it has beautiful art deco style elements all over the place!

{ The Facial }

The facial room is hidden right beside the fragrance chamber, and while it isn’t a super huge area, they made sure to fit in their customized therapy bed, which is spacious and heats up if you’re feeling cold – and it’s exactly the same at all outlets and treatments that I’ve experienced!

If you find it hard to fall asleep at night, you’ll understand how important the right lighting is – and Lancôme understands that. The lighting in the facial room is ambient, soft and relaxing once you enter – and actually changes color to correspond to the different steps during the facial!

My therapist started by gently removing all traces of prior makeup / skincare with Lancome’s gentle cleansing milk which smells really nice! I love that. As you can tell, the lighting is kinda hard to capture correctly, so you’ll get very little pictures of the process, sorry!

My therapist communicates really well, and took the initiative to explain every single step to me without asking. But when she noticed that I was nodding off, she let me rest! From what I was told, you have to be properly trained and obtain a certificate before performing treatments at Lancôme!

“Our therapists undergo stringent training procedures developed by the International Lancôme Beauty Institute in France to ensure that each massage technique moves to the rhythm of music therapy.

For every new Institute treatment, Lancôme commissions the Centre International de Musicothérapie to compose an exclusive soundtrack suited to the treatment. With the combination of targeted efficacy of products and use of machines, skin is able to absorb better as the essential ingredients penetrate deeply.”

The next step of the treatment was to exfoliate my skin gently, with a scrapper tool. It works by actually vibrating, so the therapist didn't have to press it against my skin too hard - It didn't feel abrasive at all and in fact my skin was very much moisturized with the Tonique Douceur, which was generously applied area by area before the scrapper went by.

The next step was followed by the application of 4 different types of serums - Hydra Zen, Rénergie, Absolue & Génefique! Not all at once, of course! Each serum is first applied generously over the face, before an ultrasound handheld device is used to massage over the serum, enabling it to penetrate better into your skin! The lights changes color every treatment - it was pretty interesting!

My skin felt really moisturized and supple post facial – and it wasn’t irritated at all! This treatment doesn’t include extraction – Lancôme caters to ladies of all ages, and usually the younger ones would come in for Anti-acne treatments, which has extraction as one of the steps. Before you start, Lancôme will actually run diagnostic tests with their machine to recommend a treatment most suitable for your current skin type!

{ Lancome Makeover Service }

Before I left the house, I actually started packing my make up into a bag – it’s what I usually do because you’ll have to touch up if you’re going out, right?  I had to stop myself instead! Since we’re headed to Lancôme, it isn’t really necessary to do so as they already have all the cosmetics you’ll need in-store!

evonnz-lancome-renergie-anti-aging-facial-capitol-piazza-27

If you wish to, you can actually book a makeover for yourself (whether you have booked a facial or not!). I’m familiar with Lancôme’s make up so I wanted to do it myself – I found the boutique assistant extremely helpful though – she automatically figured out which product I’ll need next, and suggested accordingly!

For foolproof coordination, simply go along with the suggested items on the tables which are placed according to theme!

Thermage® Total Tip 3.0 – Why, What, & How

By | beauty, Facials & Treatments, Life | No Comments

WHY?

Why did you decide to undergo Thermage Total Tip 3.0?

I used to hear a lot of it, but after I’ve been through it then I knew that it’s true – once you hit 25, the years zoom past you like the wind. It was just yesterday that I had full cheeks which made me look kiddish… and then the next day suddenly I see saggy cheeks in the mirror staring back at me.

*horrified look*

“Getting older is inevitable, but aging is optional.”

Yes, it is – and you can do something about it! After witnessing the magic of Thermage on my aunt (we share similar facial features like the saggy jowls and cheeks) I decided that I could do with some help. Actually, I did not realize that I need it THAT much until I did it!

I didn’t have this problem previously but somehow after I turned 29, my smile lines AND nasolabial folds made their appearance and I definitely wasn’t happy about that : (

Problems you probably never knew I had, but bugged me for a while by now - the most pronounced problem were my chin/jawline area, as well as my sagging jowls! It runs in the family.

Problems you probably never knew I had, but bugged me for a while by now – the most pronounced problem were my chin/jawline area, as well as my sagging jowls! It runs in the family.

WHAT?

What is Thermage?

Thermage is a non-invasive RF (radiofrequency) treatment which can be treated on 3 areas – Eyes, Face, Body – to improve the appearance of saggy / loose skin. You can see results in just one treatment, and the Thermage treatment can be customised to suit your needs (focusing on certain areas), with little downtime!

Let’s talk aesthetics with The Sloane Clinic

By | beauty, Facials & Treatments | 2 Comments

When you come face to face with an aesthetic doctor I’m sure quite a few questions would naturally come to your mind, like:

“Is botox safe?”

(yes, when performed by a licensed doctor that is fully trained to perform aesthetic procedures)

“Fillers painful or not?”

(depends on area(s) injected)

“Which celebrity’s face have you fixed before, ah?”

(Doctor cannot tell you la…)

but the most important and relevant question would probably be…

“What can I do to improve my looks?”
(and how much?)

Well, that’s what I would ask, anyway! Some people immediately ask “I want to botox my jaws, how much ah?” but I believe you should always seek the doctor’s opinion before deciding for yourself what you need done!

I’ll put it all on the table and admit here & now that I’ve seen a doctor and had aesthetic procedures done on myself almost a year back. They were very small procedures, but I witnessed (for myself and on myself) how little changes can make the most difference sometimes – I had botox done, and while no one could tell that I’ve done it – everyone said that I looked like I lost weight when in fact it was the botox’s magic! : x Every time I’m at the doctors we would chat for a very long time because I just have so many questions!

Most recently, I was invited for quite an interesting talk organized by The Sloane Clinic, which was about the ideals of beauty in all races’ point of view, the latest non-invasive procedures available to transform how you look, and one of the speakers was a Korean plastic surgeon, Dr. Moon, whose slides fascinated us and had our undivided attention for sure with all the fascinating before/after pictures.

I was quite happy to be there cos usually you’ll have to pay more than just $30 to hear these doctors speak or even ask them questions. During the talk, they covered all the usual procedures people will do, both invasive (double eyelid aka Upper Blepharoplasty , inner eyelid aka Epicanthoplasty) and non-invasive (fillers, botox, thermage, lasers). I even took the chance to ask Dr. Chua from The Sloane Clinic about a dark patch at the side of my face which appeared out of no where (melasma, apparently! DAMN.). Time to pile on the sunscreen!!!

And because this post would be boring without pictures, and also because I didn’t have anything drastic done YET (don’t worry guys, I’m not intending to for now (until I old and get saggier)) – here’s a photoshop process of what I could have done if given the chance!

First off, here’s a picture of me, completely unedited.

1. ZERO EDITS. My untouched face…

Unedited selfie!

Unedited selfie! Pimples. Eyebags. Droopy eyelid. Big jaw skillfully hidden with awesome hair, but still there when the wind blows.

2. If I did laser / skin treatments…

To brighten my dull face of course. And to get rid of pigmentation, blemishes / acne scarring, etc.

One can try:

  • Fractional lasers
  • LED/IPL treatments
  • Peels
  • Facials
  • Oral/Topical medication & creams

3. If I did fillers / Thermage…

Thermage
– a radio frequency procedure to tighten, lift and firm skin and alleviate all visible signs of ageing (in my case, works for my saggy jowls and loose skin!)

Fillers
Using Restylane hyaluronic acid fillers (they have different types of fillers meant for different parts of your face, because in some areas you’ll need softer fillers (under eyes) and for some areas you’ll require longer lasting ones (nose, chin).

  • on the nose, for a sharper tip
  • in my tear troughs so that I dont look like I have eye hollows
  • for fuller cheeks – you can’t see it but I have pretty uneven cheeks and that’s why I usually take pics on one side
  • on the chin for a slightly sharper V face

4. If I went a step further and had Upper Blepharoplasty for my saggy eyelids…

To be very honest, I’m prepared to get this done when I hit 45 or 50, because I’ve seen it happen on my mum / mother-in-law. Thanks to genes, I’m blessed with already beautiful double eyelids (If i may say so!) but this only means that they’ll sag in time to come.

After Upper Blepharoplasty

After Upper Blepharoplasty – the difference is very slight here, it’s more of a lift!

Alternatively of course, you can start with preventive measures like Ulthera (lifts up your brows and opens up your eyes non-invasively), as well as using creams and getting customized eye treatments from a good aesthetic clinic.

5. Now to take things extreme and get an Epicanthoplasty as well…

Removing the excess fold at the inner corners to reveal the medial portion of the eyes. Epicanthoplasty is performed to correct those with Mongolian fold, resulting in sharper inner eyelids and making the eyes appear larger and more open.

For some people, cutting double eyelids aren’t enough – a good surgeon will be able to manage your expectations and advise you if you need epicanthoplasty or not in order to achieve good facial balance and symmetry, so that you’ll look GOOD instead of weird!

Let me first erase my eyeliner and show you why I always wing my eyes out - because I actually have pretty close set eyes and a wide face - I will look like I have beady, small eyes if I don't wing my eyeliner out! So here's the erased version (but with "upper eyelid surgery" done)

after photoshopping how Epicanthoplasty would go on me!

After Epicanthoplasty (without eyeliner)

After Epicanthoplasty (without eyeliner) – now I don’t really need eyeliner anymore! Hehe.

But of course If I still want to draw eyeliner, no one's gonna stop me!

But of course If I still want to draw a winged eyeliner, no one’s gonna stop me! I prefer having a feline flick actually, it makes me look more feminine.

Actually there’s more than just epicanthoplasty and blepharoplasty –  just looking at this makes me go o_o

I know it may seem like really small changes (and its not visible if you view pic by pic like that), so here’s a compilation gif to show you all the “procedures” “performed” on my face.

Amazing, isn’t it. You know, If i were to visit a doctor I would show them this animation after hearing their opinion. Totally. hahaha. And I think my eye bags really need some help, man!

Eh, what about botox?

Do you think that I would forget about this most popular procedure, which involves injecting botulinum toxin to weaken and freeze your muscles temporarily so that you’ll have a smaller jawline / lesser wrinkles? Heh. I personally really enjoy the effects of this. The results are most obvious in photos but when people ask if I’ve slimmed down… *wry smile*

I don’t think you can tell, but in the set of pictures above (taken in March ’14), I’ve actually already had botox done.

The effects of my previous botox has long gone by now, but I’ve dug out an old pre-botox picture and photoshopped it to my liking to show you the difference! It’s really slight, but it makes such a huge difference. Blink and you’ll miss it – I’ve also photoshopped my chin a little sharper (ahh, if I had fillers done…)

All these procedures are available at The Sloane Clinic, which offers BOTH non-invasive aesthetic procedures AND plastic surgery (only available at a specialized The Sloane Clinic Plastic Surgery Centre) as well – this surprised me really, because that means that they have certified surgeons, which means more knowledge shared amongst the doctors as well to advise you on what procedures are suitable for you.

I believe in finding a good, reputable doctor or clinic – in my honest opinion, I would never do any procedure on just the first visit – I would consult 2-3 doctors for different opinions (which is what I did actually!) before concluding what I want to do and settling with a doctor I’m comfortable with.

It helps if I know about the doctor’s good skills through word of mouth, and not just based on advertorials alone. I strongly suggest consultations and going slow on these procedures, and DON’T do more than what is necessary, or get addicted to it. A good doctor shouldn’t advise you to do beyond what is necessary just to make money.

I would like to reiterate that I’m not intending to get surgery done, but nonetheless, it was good to hear the doctors share about the procedures and learn more just because this is an interesting topic to everyone.

Do read up about the various procedures available so that you don’t get too confused – and always ask the doctor if you’re unclear about anything. An extensive list of what The Sloane Clinic offers, along with diagrams, is available at their website if you’d like to check out more information.

Like I said, choosing a doctor is very important – he, or she, must have a great sense of aesthetics and not just blindly calculate everything to the golden ratio (in my honest opinion, a little flaw only makes you more unique and beautiful in your own way.)

Thank you, The Sloane Clinic for inviting us and having the wonderful speakers – Dr. Moon Hyoung Jin, Dr. Tan Ying Chien, & Dr. Chua Han Boon to share their experiences, thoughts and teaching us more about the procedures available for different problems. It was an eye-opener and interesting to know how the doctors made different people with different features and problem areas look better!

One of the interesting things they spoke about during the talk was the “Golden ratio” – the calculation and all is too cheem for me so you can read up on it, or like me, simply take the template and photoshop it over your face hahaha. I think when I start it’s a little hard for me to stop so here’s a bit more about it!

They say that Angelina Jolie has the perfect face which aligns to the golden ratio measurements

They say that Angelina Jolie has the perfect face which aligns to the golden ratio measurements

You’ve heard about the Caucasian male who wanted to look like an Asian KPOP Star – but you know, due to our different anatomy / facial bone structures, what’s beautiful in a Caucasian eyes may not be the same as an Asian’s, and for the same reason, you would definitely visit a local, or at least an Asian doctor when you want to get something done.

Just for the fun of it I went to find a picture of myself full frontal (wah, that is so hard lor!) and photoshopped the golden ratio mask to my face (calculating yourself will always be more accurate but this is definitely much faster). Here’s a little .gif of how I would look like before / after confirming my features to fit the golden ration:

P1400975-goldenratio1-before-after

Errrr… no thanks ah! Hahaha. And I guess that is why I wasn’t advised to do chin fillers. I’d look like a horse if I want to have the perfect golden ratio face, because I’m quite short! This just reinforces my opinion of finding a good / right doctor!

This picture above was actually about 2 months after I did botox and fillers – It was a really good decision to have had it done because it was life changing – the best time of my life, really –  taking pictures endlessly without having to photoshop anything! And knowing that you’ll always look good in other people’s pictures too (that’s really important when you’re a blogger, man).

I’m sure there would be many curious about how safe / painful fillers and botox are, and this is my testimony:

  • they are safe when performed by a licensed and good doctor
  • they are not permanent (goes off after 6months – 1 year depending on how fast your body metabolizes the fillers / how often you use the muscles (for botox)),
  • it was quite painless for me even without numbing cream (I’m super afraid of needles and pain and i rate it a 1/10 – 2/10)
  • There wasn’t any bruising or swelling, just felt a little sore at the muscles
  • it made me a very happy person for the next 9 months, seriously. it was best decision I’ve made in 2013!

Due to the sensitive nature of this topic, if you guys have any question(s), email me using the contact form on the site and I’ll try to answer if I can! ; )

I’m a design person – the first thing that usually attracts me about a brand is their branding and packaging and how well thought out they are – using products with aesthetically-pleasing packaging is quite a must for me (to avoid me going into a rage when I look at products with bad kerning / fonts / color choices).

philosophy-takashimaya-peel-cabin-experience-facial-10

To me, everything about philosophy is beautiful – from how they decide to use lower caps for their marketing materials (logo, product names), their clever use of uplifting words & phrases for their product names, their beautiful, harmonious product colors, the attention paid to kerning / white space, and of course, their products and how well they work – right down to how their retail outlets are designed.

Aside from raving about how pleasing the products look, let me talk more about philosophy in Singapore.

The brainchild of Cristina Carlino first arrived on our sunny shores in 2012, initially sold exclusively in Sephora stores island-wide – but they’ve since expanded to their flagship outlet in Bugis Junction (#01-16), a counter at Tangs Orchard, and most recently, opened in a popular spot just outside the Takashimaya Food Court at #b2-03a Ngee Ann City, Orchard Road! *claps*

What makes the Takashimaya outlet so unique that would warrant a visit, then? That would be their first ever exclusive “peel cabin” in Singapore!
