This is quite possibly my favorite part of blogging – trying out new products before launch dates, and sharing something I like with y’all!
In the beginning of 2014, my skin was bad, breaking out, and nothing could help it (it seemed at that point of time). I begun trying to find foundations that would give me great coverage and oil control, and one of them was Laura Mercier’s Silk Creme foundation, which I’ve reviewed previously.
I had nearly 3 weeks to try out this foundation and during the 3 weeks, my skin did a 180-degree change as I was on retinoids and using a glycolic facial wash – from oily-combi skin, I’ve become normal – dry with flaking skin… in short, I tried this foundation out on both combi-oily and normal-dry skin statuses, which means a more accurate review.
Why is the name so long one huh? Haha. You might get even more confused as Laura Mercier offers a HUGE range of base make up to suit every skin type and every color tone, as they are known for creating flawless canvases – but this is what my blog post is for, to run you through their latest product!
Not to be confused with Smooth Finish Foundation Powder (which has super oil controlling properties), Laura Mercier’s latest Smooth Finish Flawless Fluide Foundation is an oil-free liquid-to-powder foundation which promises you a smooth, natural finish to last you the whole day! It dries demi-matte instead of horrifically matte to the point that it is unnatural.
(Recently, I chuckled when a male friend mentioned that he thinks a girl has great skin because she has a very matte face. Boy, that is something you call “too much make up”.)
Suitable for all skin types as it os oil-free, it is considerably less matte than the silk creme foundation, and looks more natural than the smooth finish powder. This might be my favorite foundation out of all that Laura Mercier offers!
It is housed in a plastic bottle with a gold cap, which exposes a dropper tip. Before using, you _have_ to shake the bottle vigorously to mix it well and activate fresh color as it is a bi-phase formula, free of binding agents so that the color payoff stays true and doesn’t oxidize on you – something very much welcomed!
“Colour true pigments rest at the bottom of the package while reflective waters (Hydro-Brilliant Technology) float to the top. Vigorously shaking the package before each use ensures the pigments blend with the reflective waters to create fresh colour every time.”
The foundation retails at $75 SGD for 30ml in Singapore, and comes in 24 shades – but only 10 selected shades, suited for Asian skin tones, are available here in Singapore:
- Creme – very fair with neutral undertones
- Vanille – very fair with neutral/slightly warm undertones
- Ivory – very fair with warm undertones
- Ecru – light with cool undertones
- Cashew – light with neutral/slightly warm undertones
- Linen – light with neutral/slightly cool undertones
- Macadamia – light with warm undertones
- Buff – light-medium with cool undertones
- Dusk – light-medium with neutral/slightly cool undertones
- Chai – medium with warm undertones
If there’s one thing I dislike about the foundation, it’s actually… the packaging. I heard that the sample I got isn’t quite the final product yet, but when you unscrew the cap after shaking it with your life the product bubbles and oozes out like it has a life of it’s own – the Laura Mercier website tells you how to avoid this – “with each use shake vigorously for a minimum of 10 seconds and tap several times at the end of the package by the shade label.” I’ve tried this out on 3 bottles and I found it to work for me! Please remember to open it with the cap facing up.
Remember Laura Mercier’s 4 step philosophy to a flawless face? I find myself automatically reaching out for the same items like clockwork because it has been so ingrained into my routine!
Step 1: PRIME
This foundation doesn’t have spf properties, so you have to get your sunscreen on first before applying the foundation – I use LM’s Foundation Primer Protect, which comes with SPF 30 PA+++.

Step 2: FOUNDATION
Application wise, I ran into a few stumbling blocks when I didn’t read before trying it out – all I can say is, don’t use a buffer brush.
Laura Mercier recommends that the foundation should be dispensed onto back of hand, and then pick up and apply to clean skin with Laura’s Foundation Sponge or fingertips.
I realized that the Smooth Finish Flawless Fluide Foundation sets pretty quickly (turning from liquid to powder), so it is best to work on a small area at a time, blending fast with either a damp sponge or a flat foundation brush, which I prefer for quick application, THEN I blend out with a damp sponge for the most natural finish!
It seems that I have gotten fairer, and my shade match is between Creme and Ivory – as you can see, Creme tends to be a little fairer for me but it is closer to my skin tone than Ivory and I could always contour a little and it would look natural, or I could mix it with half part ivory to get the best match. I like doing this actually – we are living in Singapore after all and sometimes when you get a little tanner you could always switch around the mixing ratio for a better shade match.
with/without foundation, no concealer – yes my skin is THAT red.
Note: If you have dry skin, it might emphasize the flakiness as the foundation has no oil, and it’s liquid to powder formula – prior to make up, you should exfoliate gently with a warm, damp muslin cloth after washing your face to get rid of excess dead skin and don’t forget to provide some hydration – it is recommended to use the foundation primer – hydrating before foundation application!
Step 3: CONCEAL
Coverage is buildable, from medium – heavy – I still needed to conceal a little after using a light layer, but with the right shade, it did majority of the concealing work for me! That’s a huge plus for me!
This set of pictures were taken after my skin turned to normal-dry skin type.
I have pretty flushed (red) skin, so I have to use a yellow-based foundation and concealer to cancel out the redness, taking extra care to conceal around the nose and blemishes. It is important to know your undertone and match your foundation to your neck instead of basing it on what your bare face looks like. I would have looked like a tomato if I were to pick a pink-based foundation.
Full face with Creme, some concealing before contouring / applying other make up on.
And this is the finished look with my simple game face on! Concealer, Eyebrows, Eyeliner, Eyeshadow, Mascara, Lipgloss, light blusher and some lip balm! Do you want great oil control but hate overly matte foundations? Then this is the foundation for you!
Step 4: SET
As you know, the foundation dries demi-matte, and I dust a little bit of Laura Mercier’s loose setting powder over it so that it lasts longer. Laura Mercier’s loose powder contains little or no pigments so it doesn’t alter the color of the foundation on you!
So how does it perform in terms of oil control? I find that it’s still best to blot after some time – this after photo was taken at 10pm, a good 10 hours after application WITHOUT any touch ups or blotting. My face used to start oiling up at the 2nd hour, but recently it’s been able to stay matte till the 5th hour mark, so looking like this (pic below) at 10pm is pretty reasonable to me!
After 10 hours of wear!
Before my skin became normal-dry, the foundation did perform pretty well for oily-combi skin and was pretty good at oil control, although the maximum benefits could be achieved if you touched up at the 3rd hour mark with their Smooth Finish Powder to extend the matteness of the skin, especially if you have extremely oily skin. I always feel that it’s important to blot and touch up instead of relying on the make up to last on your face forever, no matter the promises!
It’s not just me who loves it…
Sometimes I feel that it’s not enough just having my statement alone, because everyone has different skintype, different skintones and react differently so who am I to say that this is the best foundation for you?
My friends share the same thought and I always keep that in mind when dishing out advise or recommending foundations, and I’m quite sure that they’ll find something they like at LM! We were actually planning to go shopping for foundation, and to my delight, Laura Mercier Singapore kindly held a little counter party of sorts for my friends to try the foundation out and receive a color matching consultation by the LM make up artists!
Laura Mercier at Tangs Orchard
My 4 girlfriends were given a quick make over by Laura Mercier make up artists, and one of them was so sold on LM products that she purchased the kit in Sephora right after the session!
We spent an entire afternoon together, and I had them report back to me about their foundation shades and whether it oxidized at the end of the day – the answer was a resounding “No!”
Veronica is the Pocahontas of our group. An avid diver and a savvy traveller, she’s tanned and was matched to shade “Buff” for Laura Mercier’s Smooth Finish Flawless Fluide Foundation.
Veronica has impeccable skin but it was a little dull, so foundation primer in radiance was used with underneath the flawless foundation to boost overall radiance and add some glow for her.
Miya has translucent, beautiful skin too, and got a little tanner during a recent holiday so she was matched to Laura Mercier’s Smooth Finish Flawless Fluide in Macadamia and Eddie used the SPF primer beneath it.
Zhiyun has nice skin, but could use with some radiance as she is naturally fair but yellow based and with some slight blemishes – primer radiance was used on her, and her Flawless Fluide match was “Ivory”!
Felicia is the baby of the group and has nice, taut skin – but she has rosacea and a little bit of acne, and hence was matched to shade Ivory which concealed her blemishes really nicely! She has oily/combi skin, so finishing off with setting powder was necessary for her! Felicia has the most sensitive skin out of all of us and found that Flawless Fluide did not cause her to react in anyway.
* Except for color correction and text input, all these pictures were left unphotoshopped and no work was done to hide blemishes or anything so yes, these are what my wonderful girlfriends look like with only Laura Mercier products on their face! : )
I had an extremely great afternoon out with my girlfriends and I was so glad that they could try out the foundations for themselves!
Like I said, I can tell you how much I love this, and how well it works for me and my friends – but It’s always best to get your shade matched at the counters and decide on your purchase after a day to see how it feels like and behaves on you. Experience the magic yourself like how my friends did- let great looking skin and that glow on your face be the best testament for how well this foundation works!
