Hello Baileys! | Free The Robot @ 118 Telok Ayer

By | Brunch, Food | No Comments
Hello, this is doge Baileys!

Hello, this is doge Baileys!

I came to be acquainted with the owners of Free The Robot / Bitters & Love recently, and being the superficial person I was, fell in love with the handsome star of Free The Robot… their dog, Baileys! I was so smitten with his cherubic puppy-like face that I had to make a trip down specially for him, never mind the ERP fee and that it’s rather hard to park, haha. (FYI, he only makes an appearance on some Thursdays!)

They're open on Saturdays too!

Robots, robots everywhere - near the payment counters, on their cups, and their walls!

Robots, robots everywhere – near the payment counters, on their cups, and their walls!

Free The Robot – cafe by day, turns into bar Bitters & Love by night! It’s actually sectioned out, so the cafe is one half of the restaurant and the bar is the other half. Free The Robot (FTR) seats around 25 – 30pax inside comfortably, and business seemed to be pretty good and brisk during lunch hour. With the boarded up facade (the entrance is really just a small door), this place makes for a good hideout place from the maddening lunch crowd around the area!

The draw of this place isn’t just Bailey’s though – FTR, though small, is actually full of photo opportunities for your Instagram feed or Facebook albums – from the drawings on the boarded front entrance, to the concrete walls inside the cafe, the wooden tables… the only tough thing to do was to find that prized seat in front of your favorite part of the wall mural!

The menu's rather reasonable, at $5 for a sandwich to $14 for a big breakfast! And where else can you find a wagyu burger for just $12? *licks lips*

FREE THE ROBOT BURGER – Homemade Beef Burger, with sunny-side egg, pickles, tomato, melted cheese and bacon – all for just $12! I loved this – I don’t usually like tomato, but it complimented the burger so well! And I’LL TAKE ANYTHING THAT COMES WITH AN OOZING EGG YOLK. P.S – You can specify how well you want your burger to be done!

My 30th at Curious Palette, Prinsep Street!

By | Brunch, Food, Sweet Treats | No Comments

So I turned 30 like many moons ago (to be exact, it was on September 29th) but it wasn’t till 2 weeks later that everyone was free to meet up for brunch (working schedules, overseas, etc etc).

And since we were all super active on Instagram and have to share every little detail of our life on IG (i jest), of course it has to be at a place so insanely photogenic (this one not kidding) where you can not just take good food pictures – but also your OOTDs, and even product shots (hahaha guess who did that?)!

{ Curious Palette }

Add:
64 Prinsep St, Singapore 188667

Tel: +65 6238 1068
Opening Hours: Sun – Thurs 9am – 10pm, Fri & Sat 9am – 12mn. Closed on Tuesdays.

(Randomly, and unknowingly, I seem to have hung out at Prinsep most of my life –
from the still-standing Mr Bean cafe during my teens, to Alps in my 20’s, and then this new favorite place. Whoa.)

What you see upon entering Curious Palette. There's no huge signboard outside the entrance, just a small chalkboard sitting atop a chair, with "Curious Palette" scribbled on.

There’s no huge signboard outside the entrance, just a small chalkboard sitting atop a chair, with “Curious Palette” scribbled on – but you won’t miss it for sure!

You might not know, but Curious Palette actually has a 2nd floor, which only opens when the first floor is full ;)

Curious Palette’s actually the latest cafe by the brains behind Stranger’s Reunion & Strangers at Work, which means one thing – they serve DAMN GOOD COFFEE.

I don’t need to be a coffee drinker to know that, because besides all the accolades (too many to list, you google better) World Barista Champ Ryan Tan has received, cos I’ve witnessed plenty of nods in approval and quips of “wah this is damn good!” from my friends who practically breathe coffee.

Damn. Good. Coffee.

Nah – Damn. Good. Coffee.

Their chocolate drink's made with tonnes of effort too! Especially the iced one. Even the lactose intolerant me couldn't resist because it comes with a huge scoop of ice cream on top : D

TRUFFLED FRIES! And that truffled aioli dip *hearts in eyes*

TRUFFLE FRIES ($12.90)! With freshly grated truffle, truffle aioli dip and parmesan cheese. *hearts in eyes*

And not forgetting the sweet potato fries (i prefer this over the truffle fries) which came with the same truffle aioli dip. They do this SO WELL, you cannot miss this!

Pan-grilled baby squid, with pickled pink ginger

Pan-grilled baby squid, with pickled pink ginger. This is no longer on the menu, as they update their menu pretty often and brings in new stuff depending on the season.

Their hearty mushroom soup's really worth setting aside some stomach space for. I've only heard positive comments about this one!

Their mushroom soup is really worth setting aside some stomach space for! They’ve since updated this – the new East Coast Mushroom Chowder ($11.90) now comes with roasted mushrooms, a truffled poached egg and tofu croutons!

Did I mention that they have spam fries too? And really pretty tables. It's like you walk in, and you take your pick on what mood you'd like today. A lighter shade? Marble? Okay can. Hahaha

Served with the best vanilla bean ice cream (you can tell because it doesn’t melt quickly), fresh seasonal berries, pumpkin & sunflower seeds – and is quite possibly the most photographed item in here!

I’ve come across quite a few comments thats been saying that they’ve copied this and that – but actually, although it had originated from Top Paddock from Melbourne, they were the first to serve this in Singapore with blessings from the owner of Top Paddock, who are friends with Curious Palette’s owners.

I’ve tried this during a food tasting session at Stranger’s Reunion last Christmas, and have loved it since! It’s really a must-order whenever you visit – and the price and size have been adjusted as the serving’s pretty huge, even for 2!

Not forgetting their signature waffles, of course. They never disappoint! Banana & berry compote *licks lips*

The cafes refreshes their menu every few months to keep things fresh, and well, there are some new offerings which I’ve yet to try myself! For example, they’ve added Peach & Raisin Ricotta Hotcake, and Bacon Ricotta Hotcake to their list of sweet things!

And not forgetting the pork loin which Yina loves, Chorizo and Foie Gras Linguini, Prawns & Konbu Spaghetti, Hot & Sour Seafood Spaghetti… Gah I’m hungry just reading off their dinner menu.

It's honestly even prettier downstairs - the cafe's bathed in natural sunlight (i love), and they even have a real coffee plant growing at a corner. And coffee machine porn for the addicts, of course.

As we get older, we seem to have more responsibilities to tend to – and that is why I’m really happy that we managed a meet up, and that the girls bothered to surprise me with mochi cakes, presents, candles that sparkle, and even PINK balloons (got me laughing) which are STILL floating and hanging off my closet door handles till today.evonnz-30th-birthday-curious-palette-22

Brunch at On The Table Singapore, aka Lola’s Sister Cafe!

{ On The Table }

118 Pasir Panjang Road, Singapore 118541
Tel: 9780 8094 | Facebook Page | Instagram | email them at onthetablesg@gmail.com
Open from 11am – 10pm (Tues – Fri) and 10am -10pm (Weekends). Closed on Mondays. Last order at 9pm / 930pm respectively.

Cafes in the west are always welcomed – especially ones with good food! *cheers* After the success of Lola, which is located in Kovan, the owners decided to open another cafe when they came across a space which carried the vibe they wanted for a cafe!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

And this outlet is just that – like Lola, the shop space is decked out in industrial chic – pretty hanging lights, metal chairs, concrete walls and floorings and plenty of wooden elements in the form of crates, tables and even pallets stacked as tables! After spending an afternoon (3.5 hours to be exact) there, I’ve realized that the place is incredibly photogenic even in the afternoon – the darker ambiance of the place somehow lets you get beautiful bokeh if your camera is capable of shallow depth of field imaging.

It is located along Pasir Panjang, just next to Fat Boys, and if you’re driving – simply turn left into Pepys Road and there’s public parking available – limited lots though! Popped by on a Sunday morning at about 11 – On The Table is about 6 months old (they opened in May!), and business’ reallyyyy good!

They menu had a small selection of food, similar to Lola’s but I think it was enough! There were plenty of hits on the list – you can view their current menu on their facebook page here (food) and here (drinks/desserts).

First up... HONEY GLAZED WINGS!

First up… HONEY GLAZED WINGS!

I haven’t enjoyed wings this much in a long while! I’m no food blogger ah, but oh my god this was delicious, especially with the honey over it! The wings and drumlets were not too greasy and it tasted really nice. I’m super loving it and I’ll be back for just this and the waffles, hahaha.

A couple of our friends were late so 3 of us ordered this to share - Chicken wings, Fries with Truffle Mayo dip, and Bangers & Mash!

When I uploaded a picture of #OTT onto my Instagram I was told by a former chef to try their Bangers & Mash - and they were really really good! Both my husband and Ron loved it and they almost finish the entire plate if not for the fact that they had to save some stomach space for later.

The fries were firm and thick cut - I prefer mine shoestring, but this was delicious! I like that the truffle wasn't on the fries because not everyone liked truffle - instead it was in the mayo dip *eyes with hearts* They were actually sold out on this at night!

The food was reasonably priced AND without GST or Service Charge – the Butter Croissant at $14 was super huge and filling! I saw one on every table and on our table itself there were 3 orders for it! It is one of the most popular items at Lola and they’ve brought it over. My Prawn Aglio Olio was a little oily but otherwise it was not too bad – would prefer the Tomato Swimmer Crab pasta though!

THE. WAFFLE. IS. SO. GOOD! I don't know about others - some people found that it wasn't buttery or sweet enough but the waffle to me, was just nice - crispy on the outside and soft on the inside - it wasn't too sweet and that meant it didn't overpower the ice cream's taste! I picked Bailey's Brownie (one of the more popular flavors) and Cookies & Cream to share with Veronica and we practically polished off the entire thing. This Waffles + double scoop ice cream will set you back just $10. *eyes with hearts again*

Ahhh, Flock.

Flock cafe is a wonder find to me, because

  • It is quiet (at certain timings) and conducive for those with mobile offices (aka trusty laptop)
  • It doesn’t close on Monday/Tuesdays etc – it’s almost always open, from 8am – 6pm daily
  • It has a very pleasing decor (which also makes me want to do work there somehow)
  • The food is not that bad at all! (Or maybe I just have weird tastebuds)
  • And most importantly, PARKING IS READILY AVAILABLE.

Unlike other cafes which had me going in circles finding parking lots (Drury, Lola’s.. Grrr) – Flock found it self in a very good spot amongst all the hipsters cafes opened in the Tiong Bahru area.

I say that because it’s located just outside a huge parking space! I’ve always resisted going to Tiong Bahru for brunch because of the lack of parking but after exploring the area, actually there’s plenty of parking lah, especially at Moh Guan Terrace!

I love this little nook in the cafe. This part is outdoors, and I actually went there twice - sat once indoors, once outdoors. The weather was still cool back then and the grilled door allows ventilation so that's not so bad in that corner! I like the privacy it offers - don't talk about the people sitting on the inside of the glass la, but I really hate it when people can see what I'm working on the laptop when I'm outside so this is a super comfy corner to me!

Beyond the counter - a narrow corridor leads to more seats at the back - an area I haven't explored! That section can get rather noisy though so I think I'll rather be seated outside.

brunch – sometimes pancakes come into the equation too but that’s when I’m really hungry! I like the eggs more than the toast though.

[caption id="attachment_16539" align="aligncenter" width="700"]Flock's scrambled eggs & toast ($7.5) + Portobello ($4.5). On my second visit: Flock’s scrambled eggs & toast ($7.5) + Portobello ($4.5).

Was rather shocked by the miserable serving of the shrooms because previously they served me a bigger serving of that, separately in a cup! It’s really just one portobello for $4.5… but they later gave me some more because I thought it was really too little, whoops. I love the scrambled eggs!

Heck, I love eggs la. I think you need a special skill to do eggs horribly lor (Had a particularly lousy experience at E** & B****s, meh!). Still prefer the one at Drury lane, but this was also good! ; )

Exploring Tiong Bahru, Part 1

(Yes, there are two parts to this!)

Anyway after brunch, Gazel and I went trotting around the area – the goal was Plain Vanilla but also for me to check out the other offerings in the area!

Woods in the books sells childrens' books - I was stopped from taking photos on the inside but they seem to have a little area for classes / activities! It's a really nice place inside.

These posters are hilarious, haha.

These posters amused me for the day, haha.

Open Door Policy is also located along Yong Siak and it looks rather atas from the outside, ah! Didn't go in but I think I'll drop by another day.

In the middle of all these hipster cafes stood a shop which obviously does distribution/wholesale of drinks and it was interesting to see the uncle working with a table lamp and writing away. If you'd like a view of how the old shophouses looked like before all the cafes took over, just open up google maps and search for yong siak street + street view! ; )

We popped by Nana & Bird too, which was just opposite Plain Vanilla.

And oh my god the bags! They were not that cheap as it was made of real leather and I really liked the design, but not enough to warrant spending $500+ on them yet.

We also visited some other stores along the area, but I’ll save the post for another day as this is getting too lengthy! Any cafes in Tiong Bahru which is worth trying to you? Please let me know cos 我很愛吃, 哈哈哈!

I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve tripped over the word “Drury Lane”. I think it’s practically every time – is it just me?!

I hope everyone reads this and calls it “that brunch cafe with red doors at Tanjong Pagar?” instead of making me say Drury Lane! Haha.

Anyway, yes – Drury lane, located at the infamously very hard to find parking Tanjong Pagar – just right opposite all the bridal shops, lined up with all the eateries and pubs that come alive at night.

Their fire engine red doors are hard to miss – In fact it’s not just doors – the entire facade for the 1st level is painted a bold red!

The cafe spans over 2 levels, with quite a small number of seating and seems to be really randomly decorated. A little eclectic, but mostly with wooden furniture – you’ll see plenty of crates and wooden benches – more rustic looking ones are on the second floor!

Unfortunately I don't drink coffee so... You'll have to google for others' reviews. I didn't hear my coffee connoisseur friends going "FANTASTIC!" so I honestly didn't think much of it.

We found great seats on the second floor, but for food photographers (these days… who isn’t already one?!), the lighting isn’t that sufficient – but yes do try seating near the windows! Which is something I love.

Come to think of it, I only explored 2 floors. Maybe there's a third floor!??! (I don't think so la huh!)

You'll be given a cup with a number scrawled on it - service was a little slow (short staffed cos it was a semi holiday and we were on the second floor), but earnest. : )

Don’t expect too many choices here (still more than Lola’s though…)

Simple plates, but oh such beautifully done eggs!

Baked beans were fantastic, as vouched for by the two with me that day. Even the mushrooms were nicely done!

I had pancakes, which was served with berry compote and fruit slices! I loved how the fruit made the pancakes less jelat to finish. It was yummy and on the whole, everything I’ve tried makes me want to come back for more! (If only the parking wasn’t that cumbersome…)

While I did like the food, I’ve only visited here once so I hope this isn’t a one off chance that the food tasted good that day. I think they have really, really nice scrambled eggs! In fact, it wasn’t too creamy (not so much butter, I guess?) and it didn’t make me feel nauseous (sometimes when I eat things that are too creamy I’ll react that way).

Unfortunately though, the service here is a little lacking. Just a little. I wasn’t sure if it was due to the full capacity, or the short staff.

I was in good company, so I lost track of time… but we were hungry and felt the hunger pangs – food took really long to be served!

In fact I believe we waited an entire 30 minutes for it or even more. I guess it’s because it was full house that day, but still… It had to be the longest wait for brunch I’ve had so far – it was enough for my friend to take an mrt from Orchard and walk over from Tanjong Pagar Station! And then by the time my friend arrived, we had to wait another 15 minutes for his coffee.

But you know what, the scrambled eggs and baked beans were so good, it’s all forgiven. Hahaha. Just make sure you come with friends you can yak non-stop with, and that you aren’t in a rush!
