Exploring Clarke Quay: Beer Market!

By | Food, Fusion, Western | One Comment

Do you have phases in life where you get hooked onto something and can’t stop doing it?

The keyword for me these 2 months was….

BEER. ビール. 啤酒。

Not sure when but when I feel tremendous stress, I’ll go for a beer. I remember myself desperately seeking Kronenbourg one fine afternoon hahaha and ever since then I’ve been asking for beer quite frequently! I’m not an alcoholic lah, but I realized I’ve turned into my dad (doing the “Yah yah ok” *nonchalant hand wave*)when he nagged at me to drink lesser of such drinks at a Japanese place (eh, it’s draft beer leh, how can don’t drink?).

I was at Clarke Quay’s Food Trail organized by Regent Media a while ago (will blog about it soon!) and Beer Market was one of the bars that was hard to miss… and instantly on my to-go list with more people! I also read about their interesting concept on 8 days a couple of months back and it got me all intrigued. (More about that later!)

That chance came really quickly and it was a gathering between the nuffnang bloggers and the nuffies. I won’t say we’re strangers to hanging out together but it was one of the few firsts meet ups with the nuffies outside of work! (But of course, we had to talk about work la… can’t escape that).

Entrace of Beer Market! It's on the second floor - but you definitely won't miss the huge yellow signs and also the "stock market monitor" outside the entrance!

Live band area - I don't like high stools much so it's nice to know that we are seated comfortably at sectioned side (so you know, it's like a little 包厢 for you and your friends)!

Where we're seated - we reserved a huge ass space for like 15-20 people! This can definitely seat up to 25 pax, no problem!

This cosy corner is just so cute, with the lamposts and all! I'll definitely chope this corner when I come again with lesser peple hahaha.

Guess who were the early ones, for once? The two 迟到皇后s of Nuffnang (Bunbun and I la, hahaha) were early for once. Like, almost an entire hour earlier. I think we should have bought toto or 4d that day.

Some facts about Beer Market:

  • Not your average pub – what makes it different is that the prices of the beers are volatile. That’s right – like what the name indicates, it fluctuates like a stock market! More demand = higher price. They have a Beer Market Exchange (BMX) where prices of the beers go up (green) or down (red) and the prices are refreshed every hour on their screens! White = usual prices, so you buy when it’s in the red and wait it out when it’s green!
  • They serve ALL kinds of beers from many DIFFERENT COUNTRIES. So if you have a friend who likes Erdinger, another one who likes Tiger, some that like San Miguel and others who like Carlsberg… you can find them all in one place – Beer Market! (Usually where you see APB beers you won’t see others!)

An example of the quirky and cool beers, like…

Banana Bread Beer (really tastes like banana omg), Double Chocolate Stout (a favorite amongst some nuffies, they are stout drinkers wtf), Sticky Toffee Pudding Ale (interesting) and my very safe Peach Beer, hahaha.

Banana Bread Beer (really tastes like banana omg), Double Chocolate Stout (a favorite amongst some nuffies, they are stout drinkers wtf), Sticky Toffee Pudding Ale (interesting) and my very safe Peach Beer, hahaha.

Being the adventurous souls we are we got a round of these interesting beers and every one tried them! It’s rather fun if you have a huge group of people to do this beer tasting thing with you – and then you just order more if you like it!

Honestly I couldn’t really grasp the beer market rates (was squinting so hard at the screens and listening to the waitress intently) but that’s why I’m a designer and not working in the finance industry hahaha.

Beer Market is rather cold (thank god I bought a new sweater just before we went to Beer Market) especially at the area we were seated at!

早到的鸟儿有虫吃!Amongst the first to arrive were actually the bloggers, ahahahha. Juli (bunbunmakeuptips), Jayne (jaynetham.com), Valerie and I! Our favorite blogger Yina Goh was noticeably absent and missed. Every time she’s not with me I get bombarded with “where is your girlfriend / partner / yina goh”. Yes, “your”! People also got boyfriend to spend time with lei, don’t like that! haha.

Wish she was with us though, because there was a live band on going and it was Ground Zero, who used to play at another place Yina sometimes get singing gigs at.

And oooooh, the pizzas! We had both the Salted Egg Sea Food Pizza (S$21.90) and Chicken Rice (S$17.90) one. The Seafood one came with crabmeat, tiger prawns and fish chunks on a salted egg yolk base! It was a most interesting western dish… with an asian twist. The chicken rice pizza was literally chicken and rice on a pastry base. It wasted pretty much like chicken rice except for the piece of crust, haha.

The food at BM was surprisingly good – I guess everyone expected this to be your regular pub with the normal pub grub but you’ll be in for a surprised if you thought that way! They have really decent food offerings and even have revamped their menu recently to include Tze Char – I wish I tried the Midnight Rice and all the other local food in the menu!

This place exceeded my expectations (and so did the turnout for the gathering!) and every one thought that the food was really good! Favorite picks of the night would have to be the salted egg pizza, the luncheon fries and magic mushrooooooooms. Wished I had more stomach space to down more food!

They also have a Happy Hungry Hour, where you can get selected dishes for special prices!

Eve, Evonne (me la!), Valerie, Eileen, Iris & Meiting!

(It’s quite interesting how we all knew each other, haha. Eve, Iris and Eileen are secondary school friends and I got to know Eve online (mIRC anyone? LOL) – we became fast friends when we met and I’ve been stealing her friends and hers mine ever since. Okay la kidding! I’m grateful to have a friend who is so sociable and open to knowing more people). Valerie is my primary school mate (already taller than me by a whole head when we were 10) and Meiting for some reason knows me and Eve at separate times – erm, her brother knew both our exes (who are not friends with each other) haha. COMPLICATED. But whatever, we get along just fine, hor Miss Lian?)

Nuffnang Bloggers + Nuffies!

Nuffnang Bloggers + Nuffies! (Some left earlier)

And I have to thank Nuffnang for expanding my social circle. You really don’t know how fun this group can be until you start drinking with them lol (ahem Gwen…).

Without Nuffnang I guess I wouldn’t be so super close to the other fellow Nuffnang bloggers, and then also get “reunited” some!

I guess belonging to a family (calling them an agency is too cold!) makes things very very different! Earning money is one thing, gaining good friends and real friendships are more important to me cos these cannot be bought!

It was a good night out with everyone, really thankful for the great turnout (machiam like birthday party hahaha) and let’s do this again real soon, okay? ; )

Pasarbella Part Deux

By | Food, Fusion, Western | 8 Comments

Actually, part tres already, because this weekend marks the third time I’ve been there – and I’m not sick of the place yet, but my husband will probably stab me with a blunt knife should I suggest PasarBella again, hahaha. Thankfully the 2nd time (my third time) he’s there we discovered another newly opened stall, Keith & Kin which sells VERY good crackling roast pork. I’m sorry I didn’t manage to get a picture of it because we gobbled it all up before I could even whip out my camera.

And oh, the $3.50 for a 3cm x 3cm square cube of alcohol fruit cake from Clipper Tea Sg was really nice, despite the WHAT-IT-IS-$3.50-FOR-A-SMALL-CUBE exclamation from me. No pictures for that either, was too famished.

If you haven’t seen my mega post for part one yet, click here!

So this time round I made sure to capture some pictures of inside the ladies room for the mummies, just because it’s clean and because I’m sure mummies would love to see what facilities there are for kids.

pasarbella-thegrandstand-turf-city-farmers-market-singapore-6

Toilet is clean. I like. ; D “Little potty” is so adorable!

pasarbella-thegrandstand-turf-city-farmers-market-singapore-7

According to Shianux the soap expert he says it’s expensive soap, but I don’t buy it. The bottle looks expensive though!

pasarbella-thegrandstand-turf-city-farmers-market-singapore-5

They have this diaper changing station which looks like a bird cage. How quaint.

pasarbella-thegrandstand-turf-city-farmers-market-singapore-6

And this little “gossip corner” which I think is more like a nursing room to me, hahaha. The aircon is installed right in the little cubicle so that makes it a very comfortable spot! Blowing the toilet smell away.

pasarbella-thegrandstand-turf-city-farmers-market-singapore-8

And a hugeass gorgeous full length mirror. Camwhores take note!

pasarbella-thegrandstand-turf-city-farmers-market-singapore-9

This time round we sat upstairs – I think the max seating capacity was probably 50-60 pax, and you can shift the tables around for your convenience. You can watch the busy market action going on downstairs!

pasarbella-thegrandstand-turf-city-farmers-market-singapore-11

Yes, no matter where you’re seated, you still have to clear the food yourself. Although, this sweet Caucasian little girl came up to me and gave me a big smile while eying my empty food packet – it turns out that she’s probably related to someone operating Le Patio (which sells paella) and she seemed to be clearing all the food purchased from the paella stall! How cute… then we got into a discussion about child labor and slavery and it wasn’t so cute anymore, hahaha. But she’s really adorable, awww.

And do check out the random posters plastered all over PasarBella – I love them! If you take note, some of them have the words “Howe” thrown in – that’s the surname of one of the founders, haha. Gotta love the creative & branding team behind this one.

pasarbella-thegrandstand-turf-city-farmers-market-singapore-12

Paella from Le Patio – there was a long queue for it, and IMHO, it’s pretty alright to me. I didn’t have much expectations because I didn’t eat much Paella while i was in Europe (so no benchmark), but I can tell you that the sight of them cooking it on the spot will make you _want_ to get some. It costs like $12.80 for the packet you see above – you get 2 mussels, 1 prawn, some squids and chicken mixed in.

pasarbella-thegrandstand-turf-city-farmers-market-singapore-13

Fish & Chips from Oceans of Seafood. My husband was like D: and had “what is this abomination written all over his face – apparently they use a different kind of fish for the fish and chips and it tasted really different from the usual dory… but I liked it! It tasted a little chinese and tbh I think it was fresh and went really well with Tartar!

pasarbella-thegrandstand-turf-city-farmers-market-singapore-14

Got myself a fresh coconut from Tangy Tangerines – it came with an uber and environmentally-friendly cute straw, but no spoon to dig out the flesh! Such a waste. Tasted real good and refreshing though, been drinking lotsa coconut juice because of the ulcer I have – probably too heaty – coconut is supposedly “cooling”! (But the flesh is heaty. hur.) I bought a packet of seedless grapes from Tangy Tangerines for $7.90 (it’s $8 for 1kg) and Estrella got some cherries. We’re suckers for packaging, I tell you. Or maybe it’s just her cos mine came in a plain plastic bag hahaha.

pasarbella-thegrandstand-turf-city-farmers-market-singapore-1

On our previous trip, we tried the Boston Lobster from Oceans of Seafood!

These 2 lobsters weighed about 1.15kg and cost us approx $120 SGD. Whoa, I know. I had a mini heart attack as well. But it was fresh and sweet and the meat peeled off soooo easily! (it was still moving when we picked it off the display!) – they say African lobsters were tastier, not sure how true that is… I’ve been hearing people tell me that the seafood there is pretty cheap actually. I’ve yet to try the sushi at Oceans of Seafood yet, I’ll probably head down again just for that! Oh yes, the lobsters came with three dips, BBQ, Black Pepper and one more I have no idea what that is – but all 3 went really well with the lobster!

pasarbella-thegrandstand-turf-city-farmers-market-singapore-2

pasarbella-thegrandstand-turf-city-farmers-market-singapore-3

Chicken & ribs – hubs said it was so-so for the ribs. Both cost us about $38 SGD in total.

pasarbella-thegrandstand-turf-city-farmers-market-singapore-15

THIS – YOU HAVE TO TRY. It’s quite possibly the best dessert in PasarBella! XD

{ Bella’s Bakery }

website & opening hours: Mon – Sun: 9.30am – 7pm

When I took this picture, there were only 5 pieces… and we bought one to try. I love strawberry cake/tart/etc! And I tell you, our faces literally lit up after tasting just one piece – OH MY GAWD! WHAT IS THIS SORCERY! WE NEED MOAR!

And then Miya went down and came back up with a sheepish look on her face. Apparently while she was ordering she realized the person behind her wanted the cake too and.. and… we wiped it out. HAHAHAHA. So yes we took all 5 pieces. Bella Bakery, well done! I really loved this and EVERYONE OF YOU SHOULD GO GET A SLICE IF YOU EVER HEAD TO PASARBELLA. You can’t miss this!

pasarbella-thegrandstand-turf-city-farmers-market-singapore-16

More desserts & snacks from other stalls…

pasarbella-thegrandstand-turf-city-farmers-market-singapore-17

Blink and you’ll miss it – this was hidden in a corner, from 5 and Spice.

pasarbella-thegrandstand-turf-city-farmers-market-singapore-18

Cookies for Sid, sister store of 12 Cupcakes. They were super friendly and I was so tempted, but I had to give it a miss as I couldn’t risk having the crumbs shatter in my mouth and getting stuck to my ulcer. *sigh*

pasarbella-thegrandstand-turf-city-farmers-market-singapore-19

Remember the picture of where Yina & I took a picture with a giraffe? Hahaha. It’s from this store which I didn’t cover previously, called Pixie Dust!

{ Pixie Dust }

facebook & opening hours: Mon – Fri: 9.30am – 7pm | Sat & Sun: 9.30am – 8pm

They sell adorable kitchen ware and display stuff! Like the Rhino and Deer heads, and some melamine / ceramic cups and plates! Look at all the colors and prints… awwww. They make me want to cook hahaha.

Okay, so till the next time I visit Pasar Bella again! Hopefully there’ll be more shops open next time and that I’ll finally get to try the sushi there! Paging for Eve Pek & Ron Lee. ARE YOU GUYS READING THIS?! Jio me anytime!

PasarBella Singapore at The Grandstand (Turf City)

By | Food, Fusion, Shopping, Western | 4 Comments

** Warning: Really long post ahead **

I’ve wanted to visit PasarBella since it was featured on 8 Days, but not all the shops were opened so we’ve delayed visiting till finally one day Yina decided to say yes to my insistent suggestion of PasarBella since we were gonna be in the area anyway. *silent yes*

Pasar = market (you know, the pasar (pasat) your mum goes to every week for fresh produce?)
Bella = beautiful, in italian

“PasarBella was conceived by the founders’ dreams to provide a one-stop food and lifestyle experience, all under the same roof. Inspired by the sights, scents and vibes of other global markets, the founders sought to offer a similar experience here in Singapore. When the opportunity presented itself, the founders’ gears of inspiration were finally turned into the perfect market retreat that the whole family can enjoy.” – www.pasarbella.com

PasarBella, if I remember correctly, is a 4 million dollar venture started by the two previous partners from the SugarDaddy group (they brought you Antoinette & PiqueNique!), and they’ve since sold their shares and left SD just for this market idea/investment they believe in. (P.S. – The shares they sold off netted them a 70% profit on their investment, and one of the partners is just 24 years old this year!)

For more information, head over to pasarbella.com… or read on!

pasarbella-singapore-turf-city-the-grandstand-49

Situated in The Grandstand (formerly known as Turf City, not to be confused with Turf Club which is super far away) along Eng Neo / Dunearn road, the market, which is the “first multi-sensory grocery shopping destination in Singapore” is housed on an area of over 30,000 square meters, and for now they have about 30 unique stores from around the world, and it is indeed nothing less than beautiful.

The markets operates from 930am – 7pm (some stores may open beyond 7pm) and the restaurants are usually opened from 10am – 10pm.

The inside is quite a far cry from what you see outside when you first drive into The Grandstand. For the better, of course! You’ll see what I mean in more pictures below ; D

It was my first trip there, and being the lazy woman I was, I tried looking for a lot nearest to one (any!) of the entrances and luckily for me, I found one just outside the drop off / pick up point after circling the area twice! There are two drop off / pickup points and they’re at the north / east entrance. The one you see below is the east entrance of PasarBella. There isn’t a sheltered carpark, so be ready to get scorched if you park too far away, or your ass burnt if you leave your car out there for too long.

My beloved ahteck (that's what we named out white car haha) is at the extreme right corner of this picture and that lot left me extremely pleased for the day lol

My beloved ahteck (that’s what we named out white car haha) is at the extreme right corner of this picture and that lot left me extremely pleased for the day lol

pasarbella-singapore-turf-city-the-grandstand-74

Parking is plentiful, but it’s just a matter of how far you’re willing to walk. Try parking at the east entrance (go one round to the back), which is located in the north carpark and you’ll find that it’s a lot nearer than parking on the two level open carpark area. I’m sorry for the horrible description, but it’s really hard for me to describe the place – couldn’t possibly capture a picture while driving alone!

Once you enter from the east side, you’re immediately greeted by a flower shop! These are what you’ll find at Poppy Flora Studio!

{ Poppy Flora Studio }

website & opening hours: Mon – Sun: 9.30am – 7pm

Poppy Flora Studio is a style savvy florist devoted to creating your ultimate floral design. We create floral styles that are far beyond typical styling ideas and we craft designs that are both personal and incredibly charming.”

(information plucked from pasarbella’s official website)

I can imagine my friend Magdalyn (who’s been bitten by a flower arrangement bug recently) twacking her husband on the arm and telling him where to go this coming weekend already. Hahahaha.

They also have plenty of artificial and pressed/dried blooms, and the area around the shop is great for photo-taking!

Ahhhh being greeted by such a beautiful sight makes me very happy.

As you walk on and explore the place, you’ll see more stores which are uniquely decorated and furnished – they have an extremely European vibe to them and reminds me so much of the beautiful market I went to in Barcelona.

Just next to Poppy Flora Studios, you’ll find Bitesize Monster (waffles!) and Salad Stop! (self explanatory).

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

And on the other side of the flower shop, you’ll see Huber’s Deli, a butcher shop for some fresh cuts of meat!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The Paella looked really yummy, but I had a bit of soup before lunch so I wasn’t very interested in it cos it’d be too filling!

Da Paolo Gastronomia’s desserts called out to me though, so I took away a berry crumble while Yina ordered her food! We contemplated Da Paolo’s pizzas and other pastries for a while but only got a croissant in the end.

Yina got the truffle mushroom cream pasta from Five & Spice and it was soooooo good! But it’s a little gelat if you don’t share it between two (of cos, I shamelessly helped her out with it ahems).

PasarBella advocates cleaning up after yourself – though I think they should get bigger bins or something. It was filled up in no time! There were people around to help wipe down the table so that it remains clean. It’s free seating, so you can bring your food around the entire compound (unless otherwise stated), wherever you choose to seat!

And if you need to ease yourself after all that food…

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

HAHAHAHA I think the drawing’s really cute! It’s mighty obvious where you should head to to relieve yourselves. Heh.

Around the dining area, just beside the salad stop! (yes we’ve gone a small round by then) you’ll find Nibbles by Rabbit Carrot Gun. Quiches & pies galore!

For those with a sweet tooth, there are treats such as English scones and traditional cakes.”

Around the corner, you’ll also find Bella Bakery. Cakes, macarons & donuts to satisfy that sweet tooth of yours!

Beyond this area, you’ll find more trading stalls than eateries. The first one behind us would be a wine shop, Merchants.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Yes, wine by the glass. My alcoholic friends (namely Mag, Veron & Yanny) would be so happy to hear that, hahaha.

I’ve been having a huge craving for beers, but I’m always driving so I have yet to get my fix of kronenbourg blanc!!! Rawr. One of these days…

The Little Provence sells… *drumrolls* TRUFFLE OIL. TRUFFLE OIL AND TRUFFLE SALTTTTTTTTTTTT (images and the scent of truffle fries float right into my mind) and many kinds of olive oil!

After Little Provence, there’s a little walkway which leads you to the Southern side of PasarBella! And just before you hit the walkway, there’s this shop which sells adorable stationery and has a baby giraffe stuffed toy which we couldn’t resist taking a picture with. HELLO, JAYNE! (hehehe)

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Right smack in the walkway, you’ll pass by a shop which sells postcards and drawings of / by the paper girl, which Yina remarked is cute and is a little tim burton-ish.

I really love the postered wall, the huge logo and the multitude of colors on one wall!

I was cajoled into taking pictures with a huge 5kg watermelon over at SG Organic!!!

Well, exactly what the neon sign on a wall of pallets said, except that I didn’t look _that_ calm, haha.

pasarbella-singapore-turf-city-the-grandstand-58

Other than the huge watermelons and huge cabbages, they also have carrots in 3 different colors! I’ve asked, and they told me it tastes the same. I’m not sure why you’d need a purple and orange carrot then, but it’s so interesting!

Other than a huge selection of teas (in both tea leaves and tea bag formats), you can also acquire some tea time accessories here!

pasarbella-singapore-turf-city-the-grandstand-45

I love the packaging and the design of the place – navy blue and white plus clean typography = always a winning factor! I left with a box of 24 teabags of Earl Grey Tea and I LOVE IT. It doesn’t end off siap, and I think I’ll come back and get the travel box set ($19.90) which contains 1 of each type/flavor of tea (16 in total, if I remember correctly)!

Cookies and drinks are available here too!

Ending off with a picture of me with my partner-in-(food)crime, Yina!

Funny duo, us two. I brought out my camera without the SD card and she forgot to charge her camera. So after putting the pieces together, we have… one good camera. Hahaha.

pasarbella-singapore-turf-city-the-grandstand-69

P.S. – I’m not paid to write this long ass post nor was I invited for food tasting over at PasarBella, I just thought it would be informative – I personally found the place extremely interesting, and I felt so happy taking the photos, and especially post processing the photos – the ambiance is just so wonderful and I love the design of the place, even though it can be a bit of a maze if you’re trying to find a friend (which is what happened to us, I was at the east entrance and Yina at the south!)

If you’ve been to PasarBella before and have eaten at Pasar Bella already, please drop me a comment and let me know if I should try any of the restaurants! ; ) I’m looking forward to heading back to Oceans of Seafood! Eat & be merry! <3

Makan Review: 49 Seats, at Kreta Ayer

By | Food, Fusion, Western | 6 Comments

The next time I need to find something to eat in Chinatown area after 9pm, isn’t too expensive (prices are all very reasonable, and nett! No GST!), has a good selection of food, cheap beers, and enough seats for a huge group – I’m gonna head to 49 Seats!

I was invited by Sera from 49 Seats to a complimentary food tasting session, and it was just nice because I had conquered almost all of Star Vista and was looking for places to have dinner. And since it was relatively near Estrella’s work place, it was a great spot to have dinner with her as our extra plus one and we headed over after work, at about 730pm!

The prices were really good – probably costs 2/3 (or even half!) of what you’d spend at TCC for the same amount (and quality) of food!

dinner-at-49-seats-singapore-food-1

49 Seats is located in 49 Kreta Ayer Road, near Chinatown. And they have exactly 49 seats (I didn’t count, Estrella and Yang did!) – for more information on parking and map, please read the bottom of the post.

They open from Mondays to Saturdays, and have been in operation for about 8 months so far. They only open for dinner and drinks from 5.30pm onwards – no lunch, awww. It is a little far for the office crowd, I’d say – but I think people working in the area would be more than willing to travel for food!

Huge curtains at entrance - can't miss it!

Industrial chic for the lightbulbs - actually it's kindda hard to pinpoint the design of the cafe because there's so many different things - the painted walls, the murals, the fishnets over the bulbs.. but it is quite well put together with a black and white theme accentuated by the beer bottles lined up on the display shelves.

The menu has an old, faded look (actually, it is really faded and will definitely disintegrate after too much handling hahah) some words fade off from constant contact, but it adds to the old newspaper feel!

We were first served drinks, in metal cups and mugs – I like!
They offer a lot of alcoholic beverages (it’s a chill out place too!) at very VERY good rates, but I was driving that day so I skipped the alcohol and ordered an ice lemon tea instead. The hoegaarden is no longer from the tap, which was a pity – the husband loves draft beers. I hope they bring it back!

dinner-at-49-seats-singapore-food-6

How cheap are the beers, you ask?!

Ad banner grabbed off their facebook page. : O Some places charge 5.90 for a glass of ice lemon tea okay!

SGD $5.90 for a half pint of beer. WHAT!?

Mushroom Soup!
dinner-at-49-seats-singapore-food-9

The soup was quite creamy – I guess you could request for less cream? I think tasted quite alright for the price, and the garlic bread was sooo shiok! So saturated that every bite was yummy and the bread wasn’t too hard – easier to chew lah! I really dislike hard bread (yes you, baguettes and ya kun crusty bread!) and this was just nice. The serving wasn’t so huge that you’ll feel too full for your mains – I like it at that size!

Golden Escargots
dinner-at-49-seats-singapore-food-10

I was looking quite forward to trying this out actually, but it didn’t really turn out the way I expected. The escargots were a tad too oily (feels like they were double fried, but I don’t think so) and lacked some taste – I guess I prefer mine with garlic butter!

Fish Dips!
dinner-at-49-seats-singapore-food-11
Oooo, I don’t usually fancy fish, but the batter on this one was just so yummy! And the alskempi sauce. I tell you, order everthing with the Alskempi sauce – YOU CAN’T GO WRONG AND YOU WON’T REGRET IT. It’s so so so goooood!!!

ALSKEMPI SAUCE. SUPER DUPER GOOD.

Prawns, Clams... the Alskempi sauce even has a whole mussel in it!

Chicken Chop
dinner-at-49-seats-singapore-food-14

The chicken chop was cooked just nicely – It is very tender, the sauce was nice and complemented the dish perfectly and had mushrooms with it – me likey! The husband loves it too – he has a thing for western fare, mainly the chops (chicken, pork, lamb…). I think I made it look very puny from the angle I took it, but the serving wasn’t that small la.

Pan-seared fish with Alskempi Sauce
dinner-at-49-seats-singapore-food-15

ALSKEMPI SAUCE. AGAIN.
This time, spread all over the pan-seared fish. I think I can eat everything with their alskempi sauce, I tell you! Fish, 3 prawns, and a WHOLE mussel again! And a lot of baby clams! *slurp* I love eating the salad that came along with this dish, dipped in the alskempi sauce. Shiok.

Smoked Duck Pasta
dinner-at-49-seats-singapore-food-16

This wasn’t too bad! I don’t really know how to rate this because I don’t eat creamy pastas (my preference is aglio olio), but the sauce was nice and Lala’s husband finished all the duck. The pasta was cooked just nicely al dente – not soggy (which I hate).

Tom Yum Seafood Pasta
dinner-at-49-seats-singapore-food-18

The Tom Yum Seafood Pasta looked more like Laksa than you know, noodles in Tom Yum Soup. I think it had a bit of cream mixed in. This was something the husband looked forward to trying out – he loves tom yum! As I don’t take spicy food, I only took a few strands and am all dependent on his review, haha. I liked that it wasn’t toooo spicy, maybe a level 6/10 (Calbee Potato Chips as a gauge, is 3/10 to me and chilli/pepper crabs are a 5/10) but I don’t think I can finish an entire plate of this without needing some milk, heh.

Yang: It’s pretty good! Tom Yum is spicy enough, and it feels like how pasta would taste like if it was made in Thailand.

Because I’m such a picky eater (and also because the husband has a different standard of how good food tastes like), I was delighted that HE actually liked the place and the food (so much that we almost returned the next day) – finally one of the few places we can agree on! I’m happy to bring him to places he likes – as long as there’s something I like there too. ; P

49 Seats will definitely see us returning for a 2nd visit soon – quite honestly, without or without food tasting, we would have ordered and paid for the food and drinks anyway! I already know what I want to order the next time I’m there – Sirloin Steak with Alskempi sauce at just $24.90, I’m coming for you!

49 Seats
Add: 49 Kreta Ayer Road
Tel: +65 6225 4332
Opening Hours: Monday – Saturday, 530pm – 11pm

The nearest place to park would be at Kreta Ayer CC, or the public carpark just before Kreta Ayer Road (exit to north bridge road) – which was where I parked and took a short 2min walk to the eatery because I couldn’t find the KACC carpark entrance in the pouring rain.

Before Kreta Ayer Road, and after Dickenson Hill Road (inbetween them) is an open air carpark. Charges are 50 cents per half an hour for parking after 530pm.

Disclaimer: I am not a professional food blogger, or a writer so please excuse my food descriptions and such – I just hope to share places I like eating at (well, we gotta eat everyday right?) and also post tempting food pictures!

Daisy’s Dream Kitchen at West Coast

By | Food, Fusion | 9 Comments

I don’t usually take Peranakan food, but we wanted to try something new the other day and I saw that Daisy’s Dream Kitchen has moved from Tiong Bahru to a cosy 50-seater about 5minute’s drive away from me! So off we went…

(All comments below in italics are the husband’s since I only ate two dishes)

Chips with Chilli dip
I think this was served free, as an appetizer.
“The chilli is super nice – tastes like the ayam penyet chilli at Jurong Point (Ayam Penyet Ria) but not as spicy.”

Chap Chye
It was kind of stupid of me to expect this to taste like how my mother makes hers, but it doesn’t and I wasn’t too fond of this dish as I find it little sour and my mom’s chup chye is usually sweet.
“I don’t know how it’s supposed to taste like…” (But he nearly finished it anyway -_-“)

Stir Fried Kailan
The Stir Fried Kailan was DELICIOUS! I had the entire plate to myself and I couldn’t stop munching on the crunchy stems and the taste was just very slightly salty, but I like it like that.

Buah Keluak
“I think it’s not bad, but I don’t really eat Buah Keluak.” (I think he just doesn’t know how to appreciate – but he finished it anwyay!) “The Assam Chicken is nicer!”

Assam Chicken
“The Assam chicken is FANTASTIC.”
(And this is what he really told the owner Daisy – “Wah your Assam Chicken, GOOD AH!” to which she chuckled and said that her son made it and would be happy to hear this.)

Cheng Tng
I had this instead of iced water (which costs 0.50cents, and has some special taste added in it – I couldn’t tell if it was lemon or lemongrass.) and I loved it. It was light, just nice and the serving portion was just right for me – not too huge but at $3+ it does seem a little expensive. My other thought was.. “Aiyah, why no sago?!” (I love sago)

All the above dishes cost us a total of about $43?

On the overall, service was attentive, it wasn’t too crowded at 6pm and food was really not bad! (I could see how happy the husband was with the Assam Chicken…) and Daisy personally came out to ask us how was the food and all – She looks SOOOOOOO young and she has such glowy skin! The cosy eatery was simply furnished, and my dishes were served in… Cornell bowls and plates! Hahahaha. It’s so homely!

8 days gave this place a really good review – both me and my husband are food bloggers or good critics about food (he fares better in the techy department), but I think that this place deserves more coverage and more business for its’ good food. Do give it a try!

Daisy’s Dream Kitchen
517 West Coast Road, #01-571 Singapore
Opens: Tue–Sun: 11am–3pm, 6pm–10pm (Closed on Mon)
