My 30th at Curious Palette, Prinsep Street!

By | Brunch, Food, Sweet Treats | No Comments

So I turned 30 like many moons ago (to be exact, it was on September 29th) but it wasn’t till 2 weeks later that everyone was free to meet up for brunch (working schedules, overseas, etc etc).

And since we were all super active on Instagram and have to share every little detail of our life on IG (i jest), of course it has to be at a place so insanely photogenic (this one not kidding) where you can not just take good food pictures – but also your OOTDs, and even product shots (hahaha guess who did that?)!

{ Curious Palette }

Add:
64 Prinsep St, Singapore 188667

Tel: +65 6238 1068
Opening Hours: Sun – Thurs 9am – 10pm, Fri & Sat 9am – 12mn. Closed on Tuesdays.

(Randomly, and unknowingly, I seem to have hung out at Prinsep most of my life –
from the still-standing Mr Bean cafe during my teens, to Alps in my 20’s, and then this new favorite place. Whoa.)

What you see upon entering Curious Palette. There's no huge signboard outside the entrance, just a small chalkboard sitting atop a chair, with "Curious Palette" scribbled on.

There’s no huge signboard outside the entrance, just a small chalkboard sitting atop a chair, with “Curious Palette” scribbled on – but you won’t miss it for sure!

You might not know, but Curious Palette actually has a 2nd floor, which only opens when the first floor is full ;)

Curious Palette’s actually the latest cafe by the brains behind Stranger’s Reunion & Strangers at Work, which means one thing – they serve DAMN GOOD COFFEE.

I don’t need to be a coffee drinker to know that, because besides all the accolades (too many to list, you google better) World Barista Champ Ryan Tan has received, cos I’ve witnessed plenty of nods in approval and quips of “wah this is damn good!” from my friends who practically breathe coffee.

Damn. Good. Coffee.

Nah – Damn. Good. Coffee.

Their chocolate drink's made with tonnes of effort too! Especially the iced one. Even the lactose intolerant me couldn't resist because it comes with a huge scoop of ice cream on top : D

TRUFFLED FRIES! And that truffled aioli dip *hearts in eyes*

TRUFFLE FRIES ($12.90)! With freshly grated truffle, truffle aioli dip and parmesan cheese. *hearts in eyes*

And not forgetting the sweet potato fries (i prefer this over the truffle fries) which came with the same truffle aioli dip. They do this SO WELL, you cannot miss this!

Pan-grilled baby squid, with pickled pink ginger

Pan-grilled baby squid, with pickled pink ginger. This is no longer on the menu, as they update their menu pretty often and brings in new stuff depending on the season.

Their hearty mushroom soup's really worth setting aside some stomach space for. I've only heard positive comments about this one!

Their mushroom soup is really worth setting aside some stomach space for! They’ve since updated this – the new East Coast Mushroom Chowder ($11.90) now comes with roasted mushrooms, a truffled poached egg and tofu croutons!

Did I mention that they have spam fries too? And really pretty tables. It's like you walk in, and you take your pick on what mood you'd like today. A lighter shade? Marble? Okay can. Hahaha

Served with the best vanilla bean ice cream (you can tell because it doesn’t melt quickly), fresh seasonal berries, pumpkin & sunflower seeds – and is quite possibly the most photographed item in here!

It's so pretty that I'm just gonna give you 2 more pictures of it. Pic 1/2, before pouring the maple syrup

I’ve come across quite a few comments thats been saying that they’ve copied this and that – but actually, although it had originated from Top Paddock from Melbourne, they were the first to serve this in Singapore with blessings from the owner of Top Paddock, who are friends with Curious Palette’s owners.

I’ve tried this during a food tasting session at Stranger’s Reunion last Christmas, and have loved it since! It’s really a must-order whenever you visit – and the price and size have been adjusted as the serving’s pretty huge, even for 2!

Not forgetting their signature waffles, of course. They never disappoint! Banana & berry compote *licks lips*

And another must-order, for Gula Melaka fans - the Gula Melaka Buttermilk Waffle, with coconut cream, vanilla bean ice cream, red beans & roasted peanuts!

The cafes refreshes their menu every few months to keep things fresh, and well, there are some new offerings which I’ve yet to try myself! For example, they’ve added Peach & Raisin Ricotta Hotcake, and Bacon Ricotta Hotcake to their list of sweet things!

And not forgetting the pork loin which Yina loves, Chorizo and Foie Gras Linguini, Prawns & Konbu Spaghetti, Hot & Sour Seafood Spaghetti… Gah I’m hungry just reading off their dinner menu.

It's honestly even prettier downstairs - the cafe's bathed in natural sunlight (i love), and they even have a real coffee plant growing at a corner. And coffee machine porn for the addicts, of course.

It’s honestly even prettier downstairs – the cafe’s bathed in natural sunlight (i love), creating a cozy and inviting environment – the lights, the concrete and wooden touches – everything’s just so well put together!

As we get older, we seem to have more responsibilities to tend to – and that is why I’m really happy that we managed a meet up, and that the girls bothered to surprise me with mochi cakes, presents, candles that sparkle, and even PINK balloons (got me laughing) which are STILL floating and hanging off my closet door handles till today.evonnz-30th-birthday-curious-palette-22

Lao charbor don’t need so many frills, just company of a few good friends. Thank you girls, for taking time off, and making the day a memorable one. I love you all! ;)

Exploring Tiong Bahru: Cupcakes at Plain Vanilla, Strangelets, Books Actually

By | Food, Home / Lifestyle, Shopping, Sweet Treats | 6 Comments

Plain Vanilla.

I’m quite new to cupcakes, you know. I remember tasting my first – at Guerlain’s launch of their La Petite Robe Noir and that was just a few years ago. I was amazed by how awesome and searched for cupcakes – and the one that I fell so super, duper deeply in love with… Plain Vanilla.

I never thought I could love anything other than Red Velvet till I tried their White Chocolate Strawberry, with a cream + dried strawberry centre. PERFECTION.

Some found it too sweet (I have to admit, it is quite sweet at times) but the best way to down this is with a cup of tea and you balance out the sweetness! May I suggest Earl Grey too? Haha.

Ever since they opened this outlet in Tiong Bahru I’ve been meaning to visit but was thrown off by the limited parking lots in TB area, till I realized that PV is located in a very convenient location actually, it’s pretty near an exit of the carpark, where Nana & Bird is located.

Prior to visiting I didn't even so much as take a peek of how their store looked like on their facebook page, so I was really swept away by the sweet decor! Bicycles outside. Check. Bunches of dried something (Lavender ah?) hanging over the front of the shop.. and the inside.. oooh.

So, Plain Vanilla at Tiong Bahru doesn’t just sell cupcakes – there’s also other bakes, refreshing drinks, party decor (mason jars, striped straws and even greeting cards), cookware and seasoning!

Outdoor bench - no indoor seating at the moment, unfortunately!

And best of all, there’s a huge square table for you to sit down at and just do your thing or chill with your friends. There’s even a little play area for children, which is just beside a comfy bench!

If you ever drop by PV, don’t forget to pick up the White Chocolate Strawberry! Introduced it to Trisha and Yina and they LOVE it. I like it more than their red velvet even! ; )

PV’s cupcakes are $3.50 for one, or $19 for 6. They also do customizing and deliveries, all information can be found on their website here: www.plainvanillabakery.com. They are closed on Mondays.

Strangelets is located at 7 Yong Siak Street, and they’re opened daily till 8 pm (sometimes they open at 10am, some days at 11). Visit their website here!

Beside Strangelets, there’s also Books Actually, one of the more prominent shops along Yong Siak street, thanks to the beautifully hand drawn decor.

books-actually-yong-siak-tiong-bahru-1

They actually don’t just sell books – once you wander in-store and delve deep, you’ll find plenty of vintage items, ranging from records, rattan baskets, to glasses and even old photographs! They have the largest selection of vintage glasses I have EVER seen. When I have my own home I’ll need a few of them, man.

Strangers’ Reunion @ Kampong Bahru

By | Brunch, Food, Sweet Treats, Western | No Comments

Some of us Nuffnang bloggers were invited to Strangers’ Reunion to sample their newest menu’s offerings, and it was a reunion of sorts indeed! Met up with the ones I was familiar with, and also some new faces for the night!

strangers-reunion-at-kampong-bahru-11

If you do a quick search, Strangers’ Reunion is located at 37 Kampong Bahru Road – it is my first time there so I had to google – and the map tried to lead me to god knows where. But if you type in Strangers Reunion instead of 37 Kampong Bahru Road, it routes you to the right place! It’s just a little down Cantonment Police HQ towards the west (AYE/Queensway).

strangers-reunion-at-kampong-bahru-7

Strangers Reunion

37 Kampong Bahru Road Singapore 169356
Tel: 6222 4869
Opening Hours: 9am – 10pm, closed on Tuesdays

Parking… well don’t wait along the main road, which I did for 5 minutes – turn left and you’ll find yourself with two lanes of parking (50 cents per half an hour till 10pm) and I found a lot rather quickly and easily too. You’ll have to get out of the area by 10pm though, it’s season parking only after 10pm.

Anyway, I entered through the backdoor because of where I parked – and thank god there was a backdoor! The first beautiful sight I chanced upon was the toilet sink, ahhaha. The toilets were clean, thumbs up for that! (I really hate eating places without clean toilets)

The interior of the cafe is an eclectic mix of simple, industrial chic – you’ll see much concrete, wood, and a simply decorated flowers on the table, topped off with a dash of beautiful oriental brush paintings hanging on the walls which can be quite the mood changer.

strangers-reunion-at-kampong-bahru-3

strangers-reunion-at-kampong-bahru-7

Like I’ve said, it’s my first time there so I didn’t know what to expect – but despite not having been there, I’ve heard loads about their coffee – their Barista, Ryan Tan is a three-time Singapore National Barista Championship winner as well as the second runner-up in the World Latte Art Championship! (read more on article here). Unfortunately, I don’t take coffee nor have the taste buds to appreciate it, so you’ll have to take my word (and the championship titles Ryan has achieved) for it for now, hahaha.

strangers-reunion-at-kampong-bahru-5

strangers-reunion-at-kampong-bahru-6

They also serve pastries – I didn’t get to sample them, but I was drooling at their cakes in the display (i’m a cake person *raises both hands*) and I’ve heard that they’re pretty famous for their breakfast too!

strangers-reunion-at-kampong-bahru-4

The sofa seats were rather comfy, and plush cushions were readily available along them. (refer to first picture!)

strangers-reunion-at-kampong-bahru-8

We picked our choices of drinks for the night from their menu, and I ordered my favorite Earl Grey Tea!

strangers-reunion-at-kampong-bahru-17

Lattes were a popular choice too – Yina had the iced one with ice cream, whilst Yuen sitting beside me enjoyed her cuppa with simple, but still beautiful art on top. (Sorry ah, not a kopi person so I really have no idea how I should describe coffee)

strangers-reunion-at-kampong-bahru-14

strangers-reunion-at-kampong-bahru-15

They also serve iced water in glass bottles, and gosh I drank so much water and tea I went home all bloated!

strangers-reunion-at-kampong-bahru-9

(I know right, water also must post picture?! I was really parched so I was thankful for the glass of water waiting for me when I stepped in, haha)

strangers-reunion-at-kampong-bahru-12

Andddd let the feast begin!

The new dishes on the menu to be served to us tonight:
(Dishes I like are marked and recommend trying with an asterisk *)

  • * Lotus Root Chips, with spicy aioli
  • Egg Net Tempura Soft Shell Crab, with spicy kewpie mayo & corn in a brioche bun
  • Corn & Zucchini Fritters, with avocado, poached egg & spicy tomato relish
  • * Crispy Pork Belly, with truffled mash, ginger beer, apple & date chutney
  • 12-hour Braised Lamb Shoulder Flat Bread, with quinoa tabouli & hummus
  • Za’atar-spiced Eggplant Fritters, with lemon yogurt
  • * Buttermilk Waffles – with artisan greek yogurt & fresh fruit, vanilla ice cream & fresh fruit or maple syrup & fresh fruit

strangers-reunion-at-kampong-bahru-13

Lotus Root Chips, with spicy aioli

I loved the second round of lotus root chips – I think the first round got a little limp after all the picture taking and waiting, so they served up a second batch which was less salty, with the right amount of crunch and chewiness and I love the dip! It wasn’t spicy at all for me, but tasted really good still!

strangers-reunion-at-kampong-bahru-16

Egg Net Tempura Soft Shell Crab, with spicy kewpie mayo & corn in a brioche bun

Really not a fan of Brioche, but Yina liked it. The Tempura Soft Shell Crab was a tad too soggy, but still sweet and delicious to me. It was a surprise even to myself because I’m not a fan of soft shell crabs. One plate usually comes with two of it instead of the 3 you see in the picture.

(thanks to Yina for the image!)

(thanks to Yina for the image!)

Corn & Zucchini Fritters, with avocado, poached egg & spicy tomato relish

This was the next surprise of the night because I actually finished almost the entire thing, haha. I don’t even like zucchini to begin with! I wouldn’t usually order such foods (too much explosion of taste – egg, avocado, then spicy tomato and zucchini?!), but this was yummy!

strangers-reunion-at-kampong-bahru-19

The star of the night had to be this – Crispy Pork Belly, with truffled mash, ginger beer, apple & date chutney – at least for me! I love pork. PORK BELLEH. OH MY GOD! Give it to me!

Surprisingly, the pork belly wasn’t too fatty or “gelat” at all, as they managed to remove most of the fatty portions by a special overnight compression technique – and the delicious chutney also helped loads by adding a zesty punch to every mouthful. Plus the aromatic fragrance of truffle… ahhhh it makes me want to get a bottle of truffle oil and some truffle salt right now. And did I mention that the pork skin is CRISPY? Like the 烧肉 kind. *in heaven*

strangers-reunion-at-kampong-bahru-21

12-hour Braised Lamb Shoulder Flat Bread, with quinoa tabouli & hummus

I don’t like lamb – I’ve never liked the taste nor the smell, so I skipped this. I’m sorry I can’t give much comments on this dish, but hey at least you have a visual expectation of this dish! Hehe.

strangers-reunion-at-kampong-bahru-20

Za’atar-spiced Eggplant Fritters, with lemon yogurt

By this time round I was too full and decided to save some space for the buttermilk waffles so I skipped this too (not exactly a fan of deep fried stuff or eggplant). It looks really nice and crunchy though!

strangers-reunion-at-kampong-bahru-22

Truffle Fries (not a new dish).

3 Words. OMG MUST ORDER. Peggy loves the truffle fries too!

strangers-reunion-at-kampong-bahru-23

Buttermilk Waffles – with artisan greek yogurt & fresh fruit, vanilla ice cream & fresh fruit or maple syrup & fresh fruit
The next MUST TRY dish of the night – their Buttermilk Waffles!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

You can choose from 3 combis – with greek yogurt, vanilla ice cream or maple syrup, all with fresh fruit. I usually like soggy waffles, so I love the ice cream one – but if you like crispy waffles, whoa! This is totally for you! I like how it isn’t too hard, and while I didn’t take too fondly to greek yogurt, I love the sprinkling of fruits on top and I can already see myself coming back for this and also their all-day breakfast!

Thanks for the makan session, Strangers Reunion! I’ll be back for breakfast someday!

Ladurée opens at Ngee Ann City (Takashimaya) Singapore

By | Food, Sweet Treats | 21 Comments

UPDATE AUGUST 2014: Laduree Singapore has set a rule of min 6 macarons for purchase.

I remember the first time I tried Laduree Macarons, in Paris. I have been gobbling down macarons ever since I came back to Singapore after my honeymoon. Love at first taste! Okay, not the Liquorice one though – the salted caramel!

If you haven’t had time to visit the store, or you’re trying to skip the queue, here are some pics of what Ladurée Singapore offers.

Laduree's counter at Level 1 (just ouatside Chanel in Ngee Ann City) - On the first day, at around 4pm, the queue wasn't too bad - you could get into the shop within 7-10 minutes for L2's boutique and L1's queue seems to be about just as long (it snakes all around the escalator, just outside LV)

Location

Ladurée, famed for their savory macarons, candles and many other stuff has finally opened their first store in Ngee Ann City (usually referred to as Takashimaya, which is actually the departmental store and not the entire shopping mall) and there’s actually two separate locations for you to purchase their delicious tea time snack. The counter is located on Level 1 just outside Chanel and Louis Vuitton – good for takeaways, and on Level 2 they have their boutique which carries the candles, books, bags, jams, and accessories on top of their macarons!

Prices of Laduree’s Macarons

Pricing wise, it’s $3.80 SGD for a piece (update August 2014: Laduree Singapore’s minimum order will be 6 pieces) , and they let you takeaway in paper bag or boxes. There is no discount even if you buy 70 pieces, nor do they restrict you to buying only 8, 12, 15 or 50 pieces (they have boxes that fix a standard number of macarons) but I guess they listed out the price for convenience of the shoppers as well.

For your reference:

  • Box of 8 Macarons: $30.40 SGD
  • Box of 12 Macarons: $45.60 SGD
  • Box of 15 Macarons: $57.00 SGD
  • Box of 24 Macarons: $91.20 SGD
  • Box of 32 Macarons: $121.60 SGD
  • Box of 40 Macarons: $152.00 SGD
  • Box of 50 Macarons: $190.00 SGD
  • Box of 60 Macarons: $228.00 SGD
  • Box of 70 Macarons: $266.00 SGD

Prices for the boxed sets differs from box to box; The round Cristal boxes hold a specific number of macarons and are (of course) pricier than the regular boxes:

  • Cristal Size 1, 15 Macarons – $66.00 SGD
  • Cristal Size 2, 20 Macarons – $84.00 SGD
  • Cristal Size 3, 25 Macarons – $105.00 SGD

laduree-singapore-takashimaya-3

And for the prestige boxes, they come in various sizes:

    • Size 1, 24 Macarons – $102 SGD
    • Size 2, 30 Macarons – $126 SGD
    • Size 3, 34 Macarons – $142 SGD
    • Size 4, 54 Macarons – $228 SGD

    • Size 5, 40 Macarons – $172 SGD
    • Size 6, 55 Macarons – $236 SGD

  • Prestige Pink Square, 24 Macarons – $102 SGD
  • Bonaparte, 18 Macarons – $90 SGD

These are just some of the various different box sets they have – they also come in a special Singapore box!

laduree-singapore-takashimaya-4

Flavors available at the moment

Currently, there are 3 seasonal flavors and flavors may vary depending on stock availability.

You should try to consume them within three – four days, and they should be kept in the lower part of your refrigerator. (meaning, not the freezer!)

laduree-singapore-macarons-april-2013-1

Flavors I’ll recommend – Rose (tastes like bandung), Marie Antoinette (if you like earl grey and turquoise – looks blue in the pic but the macaron came out turquoise, haha), SALTED CARAMEL (heavenly), Lemon (if you need a perk me up) and I guess if you’re a chocolate fan you’ll snap up all 5 of their chocolate creations! I’m super curious about Yuzu Chocolate, and the special chocolate macaron which was covered in gold flakes, but didn’t get any as I’m not a huge chocolate fan.

Good customer service (at least that's what I experienced!) You will get a ticket after placing your order and your bag will have the receipt placed at the cashier - the cashier will match the ticket to the receipt and ring up your purchases! I made a second order after I've been given the ticket and they very gladly retrieved the bag from the counter to add on more stuff to my order XD

Shared the macarons with my friends who were at work during the afternoon - and they all loved the Rosé! My husband tried the salted caramel and said it tastes like the one in Paris XD

They may be expensive, but I know I’ll be back for more and I definitely won’t stop at just 2 if I have to queue for 10 minutes! : p
I’ll die fat but happy, I tell you. *chews on macarons as I type this*

Take note:
As herworld has reported, Laduree L2 will be closed on the 16th and 17th for a private event, so you can only purchase your macarons from L1’s counter.

And oh yes. How does one pronounce “macaron”?
Me no expert, but In English, “meh-kah-ron”. In French, “Meh-kah-horn“, I believe! (I’m just spelling it as I would pronounce it hahaha). Enjoy your spoils and hopefully the queue isn’t too long all the time! ; )

P.S – Was not paid to review this – I queued and purchased my own macarons out of love for the sweet delights XD

FRENCH TOAST!
*dies of happiness*
the huge lump was margarine, not ice cream - we later poured the remaining softee from the chocolate lava cake on this and removed the margarine - super heavenly too.

// Datsumo Labo
Headed down to Datsumo Labo with Miya for a consultation and to understand more about their IPL services! Datsumo Labo hails from Japan, has 35 branches world wide, and intend to open 5-7 branches in Singapore! The packages can be transferred if you move from one city/country to another – I find this very convenient for people who have to shift around every 1-2 years!

Unfortunately as I’m still trying to conceive, I have to shelf the IPL plans till much later. But if you want to give it a go, head down for a consultation – there’s a 10% off for my readers on their already _very_ cheap rates! ^^*

I must thank Hoshino Coffee’s wonderful staff for getting us seats, and trying their best to serve the food faster because we were in the rush but we, being the sweet toothed greedy pigs we are, still wanted to try out Hoshino Coffee XD

AND I’M SO GLAD I DID. I’ll be back!!!
