Melbourne Cafe Hopping Part 1 (March 2016)

By 28 June, 2016Australia, Travel

I have SO many backdated travel logs that it’s not funny. I just get so shutter happy with my cameras and take too long to edit… But since this one’s still relatively fresh (March 2016), I thought I’d get it done first!

To be very honest (please don’t drop me for any future campaigns, Australia), Melbourne’s probably the last travel destination on my list – for some reason I just never had any inclination to visit, but I definitely didn’t mind it. A work trip beckoned and since the exchange rate was favourable ($1 SGD = AUD $1.036)… why not right? The next thing you knew, I was on my way over to one of Australia’s most popular cities!

This trip’s itinerary has gotta be one of my favourites because what we did was cafe hop ALL DAY. *heart in eyes* It was the perfect timing for me to try out my new Olympus PEN-F with the amazing light you’ll get in Australia! For this trip, I had only my Olympus 12-40mm mounted on the Olympus PEN-F – I really think that this is the best travel lens and combination for me, especially for street photography, since the PEN-F’s shutter sound can be silenced! I love the EVF as well, which worked really well against the strong sun lighting conditions in Melbourne.

Less words, more pictures. Enjoy Part 1 of my Melbourne Cafe Hopping post!
(Link to my Google Map of all the places I’ve visited in Melbourne and places YOU should visit at the bottom of my post!)

Day 1 in Melbourne

The Kettle Black, Seven Seeds, I Love Pho

We landed bright and early at around 8am from a red-eye flight – I never knew that it would take 7+ hours to get to Australia! It was a lovely and spacious flight aboard Emirates (A380!!!) and the weather was so pleasant! It was a comfortable 24~ degrees in the day and dropped to about 18 ~ 16 degrees at night.

Our first stop was a popular one - Kettle Black!

We were lucky to have gotten there earlier - there was a snaking queue outside by the time we left! It was a little hard to get parking space even though there were plenty of lots.

I heard that the bosses spent almost 1million AUD to renovate both The Kettle Black & Top Paddock, and you could note some similarities in both cafes - the lamps which cast a really pretty shadow on the ground, the white and black theme, and the pretty greens!

One thing I’ve realized about Melbourne – THE PARKING IS REALLY QUITE EXPENSIVE! Glad to have friends who knew Melbourne super well to bring us around and save us the headache of searching : p

Middle Fish is a Thai Restaurant right next to Seven Seeds, and I wish I could have eaten there too! It looked really good but we were headed over to Seven Seeds and stuffed as mad from The Kettle Black.

No food pictures because we didn’t have any nosh over here, but I think this place’s a must visit if I were to return! Thai food, anytime!

We hopped over to Seven Seeds – it was a bit of a wait for seats since there were quite a few of us. No problem for me of course, I walked around to check the place out in its entirety! 2016-03-13-melbourne-day1-c-seven-seeds-14

And then it was time to check into our AirBNB apartment in the Docklands! The apartment was FANTASTIC – It could house up to 12 pax (4 rooms), in the most convenient location, clean, had good beds and an open kitchen with all the appliances you need. And it had good security and even parking lots reserved for you!

Here’s the link to the AirBNB apartment – however I’ve heard that it was getting sold soon so I’m not sure how that’s gonna work out on the site.

You’ve probably heard that shops in Australia are mostly closed by 5pm. Well the cafes serving brunch food in fact mostly close at 4pm! Not to worry though, there are plenty of restaurants for your dinner choices. And after checking in to the AirBNB the early evening, we just chilled and waited for a bit before going for dinner – and since this was largely a migrant city, we had to choose something Asian and comforting – Pho!

I was dead tired after this because I didnt sleep at all from the flight, but we still went over to Crown (the Casino) to try our luck on the tables : p

Would have taken some pictures BUT the Casino had a no picture taking policy so sorry, none of that! I didn’t make money or win the casino down that day (damn!) but I did have a lot of fun! In fact it was my first time playing in a Casino (walking through Casinos in Las Vegas didn’t count). Some tables start with a very friendly $10 so I went back practically every night since there was nothing much to do at night anyway. *sheepish smile*

Went back to the comfy AirBNB, washed up and had a good rest, because Day 2 was supposed to be pretty epic!

Later on as we were walking back to the car, we got distracted – Zenn brought us over to this little lane which was fully decorated with street art – it was amazing! The ENTIRE alley’s walls were done up and I’m so glad my PEN-F was able to capture it and that the 12-40 was wide enough to get most of it in the frame.

I had to take a tinker and I went up a flight of stairs with almost no lighting in the stairwell – I already got a little surprise when I reached the 2nd level, but when I opened the door I took at least 2 steps back. And actually pondered if I should just hold my pee in.
