Why did you decide to undergo Thermage Total Tip 3.0?
I used to hear a lot of it, but after I’ve been through it then I knew that it’s true – once you hit 25, the years zoom past you like the wind. It was just yesterday that I had full cheeks which made me look kiddish… and then the next day suddenly I see saggy cheeks in the mirror staring back at me.
“Getting older is inevitable, but aging is optional.”
Yes, it is – and you can do something about it! After witnessing the magic of Thermage on my aunt (we share similar facial features like the saggy jowls and cheeks) I decided that I could do with some help. Actually, I did not realize that I need it THAT much until I did it!
I didn’t have this problem previously but somehow after I turned 29, my smile lines AND nasolabial folds made their appearance and I definitely wasn’t happy about that : (
What is Thermage?
Thermage is a non-invasive RF (radiofrequency) treatment which can be treated on 3 areas – Eyes, Face, Body – to improve the appearance of saggy / loose skin. You can see results in just one treatment, and the Thermage treatment can be customised to suit your needs (focusing on certain areas), with little downtime!
Effects last for around 9 months – 1 year depending on current skin conditions.
“Thermage treatments are all about energy – focusing radiofrequency energy to kick start the body’s own natural renewal process. Like most smart technologies, the process is relatively simple – it’s a combination of heat energy to treat deep tissue, and cooling effects, to protect the skin surface and deliver better patient comfort. And our latest evolution of Thermage includes patented Comfort Pulse Technology – gentle vibrations and interspersed cooling that make your Thermage treatment even more comfortable.”
I first heard about Thermage by reading Shirleen’s experience about it – she has been through 3 generations of Thermage, and one would be comforted to know that Thermage Total Tip v3.0 is much less painful than the other versions. In fact, for me – other than about 6 – 10 zaps, I felt nothing at all.
How did it go?
Let me bring you through my experience!
First, you have to apply numbing cream and let it sit for approximately 15-20 minutes to take effect.
Then, I was told that they’ll be mapping my face with grids – basically, they transfer the markings onto your face by swabbing rubbing alcohol over your face. It kind of stings but that wasn’t unbearable.
After the grids were marked, the doctor also marks out areas I’m concerned about so that he can concentrate on them – which are my jowls, obviously!
Then they’ll apply a pad on your tummy for the current thingamajig (yes I don’t know how to explain to you, but its a must have.)
They use a new tip for every procedure, and i was shown how it looks prior to commencing the treatment.
Alright, I’m ready for it, Thermage CPT! Bring it on!
And so the zapping begins!
I call it zapping cos sometimes when you do feel the pain, it’s akin to getting shocked (and well if you’ve felt nothing for over 100 zaps but this one suddenly hits you it’ll feel like a shock yes?).
While a zap is being delivered, the Thermage Total tip actually vibrates to ease the pain and disperse the heat, so you don’t feel anything (or feel less pain).
In my case, I didn’t feel much pain at all but the vibration annoyed me so much that I requested for it to be turned off for most of my face, except at the hairline, jaw and neck area which was more sensitive than the other areas.
The settings of my Thermage was set at 4.5 / 4, which was extremely strong, but I felt next to nothing (except a few zaps here and there, maybe 6 – 10 out of 600+ zaps I had). Strangely though, my friends had theirs at 1 or 2.5 and they all felt quite a moderate amount of pain – I guess that’s why I’m thankful for the 2 layers of numbing cream!
We had half my face done to compare the results – and it was really pretty obvious!
First thing that surprised me was… eh, no redness from the procedure? (whatever redness you’re seeing now is my skin’s natural flush)
Next was… hey, is it just me or is my right eyebrow much higher than before?! (left in the pictyre)
And upon opening my eyes, I could see some difference! My eye lid wasn’t as hooded as it was before. : D I quickly let the doctor get on his way and finish the other half of my face, and before I knew it, it was done! (Picking a good doctor is important – both skill (means you feel less pain and he asks you if you feel pain frequently), and ability to help you pass time while he’s zapping!)
I came out a happy patient – It didn’t hurt as much as I thought it would, nor did I have to stay at home for a few days because there were absolutely ZERO redness on my face. In fact, the only thing I felt was that my face seems to be much tighter and the improvement around the chin area was IMMEDIATE.
Thermage actually gives you an instant result, but it also stimulates collagen growth, which means that you’ll see even better results a few months in – which is why I didn’t notice the improvements of my saggy jowls till about 2-3 months in and even my friends (who always take photos for me) noticed the difference in my jawline and jowls! It makes me incredibly happy as I consider that to be the biggest problem for me, and looking at how my grandma and mum ages, it’s NEVER TOO EARLY to start preventing the onslaught of saggy jowls!
The double chin came back though (I would think it’s just that the skin isn’t as tight as right after the treatment), and by the 3rd month it was slightly flabby again, but not as much as before. I must say that it depends on individual, and I might just really need to lose weight… or go for another Thermage session, hehe. I consider this treatment EFFECTIVE – even for a person in their late 20’s or early 30’s. Thermage does for you what a cream or serum takes ages to – and it is just what I was looking for – I would rather start using effective skincare after aging effects have been “reversed”!
Botox & Thermage to compliment each other?
I did have my concerns before Thermage as I had botox done about half a year or more before, but I was advised that it was okay. But in actuality, after some explanation, I have derived at the conclusion that Botox, when injected about 1-2 months prior to Thermage, can give you an even better sculpting effect. I am not selling services, but just explaining what made sense to me.
Botox shrinks your muscles, and your jawline and takes 1-2 months for best effect. But skin would be lax at the area where your muscles have been made smaller (I did notice that effect on myself), and that’s where Thermage comes in, to tighten your skin – this would mean a more contoured face with skin that is taut. I hope that made sense!
I must emphasise again that not all doctors have the same aesthetic sense or make the same judgements, so choose your doctor/clinic wisely!
I did my Thermage CPT session at Calvin Chan Aesthetic & Laser Clinic in Wheelock place.
Thermage costs differently at different clinics – the price range is around $4,500 SGD for a single session, you might want to ask if a clinic offers such services and pricing. It is advised that one does it every year for regular maintenance (and that is also approximately how long it will take for the effects to slowly wear off).
Remember, everyone’s pain threshold is different and you should always let the doctor know which areas you’d like to work on – a good doctor will know how to customize a treatment for you so that you do not lose fats at the wrong areas and get collagen growth stimulated at the right areas!
